NCAA talks expanding hoops tourney to 72 or 76

Let’s face it. It’s going to happen. The B1G and SEC will get their combined 20 teams in. Those extra 4-8 spots will help to get a few more deserving mid majors in. At least I hope.

This all reminds me of the days when the Big East was talking about adding irrelevant directional colleges to keep up with the football schools. No one thought seven catholic, non-football schools stood a chance of surviving on their own. Yet in reality, we were MUCH better off without football teams.

The same is true of the NCAA.

All automatic qualifiers in main draw final 8 at large go to dayton
Annnnd this is exactly how you spoil the magic of the tournament.

There is nothing they won't ruin for the shortsighted appeal of a couple dollars. Long-term, this might actually cost money, as the appeal of the brackets will certainly be diminished.

So expansion is better?

No -- in fact, I'd go back to 64 if I could. But this is a way to let in more mediocre power-conference teams while sending off the conference champions from mid- and low-majors off to Dayton to cannibalize each other, eliminating half of them before letting them into the real bracket. I think that sucks. Those teams picking off the big programs are what people love about the tournament and why the brackets help create so much engagement among casual fans.

Should an auto bid be rewarded for ncaa berth whether tourney or reg season champ?

I don't know if I'm missing something in the story, but no, I think they're for conference tournament champions.

I don't know what the finer details are, but it should be Dayton becoming a mini play-in tournament for the final 8 at-large bids, likely to be the glut of average P6 programs. Let the conference champions go into the main bracket.

I wouldn't get into that. They can go to a lesser tournament. If conferences choose to provide their auto bids to the tournament champions (they all will lol) instead of who was the best team during the regular season, so be it.

If it is ever to expand, this is the only acceptable format.

If the tournament expands to 76, there will probably have to be a second site along with Dayton for opening round games.

You would have to play 12 games on Tuesday and Wednesday instead of eight (with 72 teams) or the current four (68 teams).

Basically, every team you add to the field adds one game to the tournament.
