The NCAA is creating a second Women's Basketball Tournament. The 32-team Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament is planned to tip-off after the 2023-24 season.

A familiar name is quoted in the linked story. Perhaps predictably, he's not thrilled with the prospect.

Sounds like the “ every player In youth sports gets a trophy “ syndrome is taking over the NCAA .

Looks like you can stick a fork in the WNIT

No school is going to pony up money for a tournament when you can play in another one of equal or better prestige for free.
I think the WNIT will continue to exist in some form much like the CBI exists on the Men's side.

Yes, the WNIT immediately becomes the third priority behind two NCAA-owned tournaments but they can likely continue with a 16, 24 or 32 team field.

WCBB has already shown its appetite for 132 post-season teams.

But the question becomes where does the money come from? The schools that would get bids don't have the same financial wherewithal as did the previous WNIT teams to play games at home.

All these years I said that SHU paid to play in the WNIT, and the word parroted from the staff was how it wasn’t true, when of course it was!

Yes and no.

They paid for home games once they were chosen as an NIT entrant. They did not pay to be chosen.
