New Powell in Town: 2021 California wing Tyler Powell commits to Seton Hall

Five years after taking a trip down the New Jersey turnpike to pluck Myles Powell out of Trenton, Seton Hall ventured to the west coast to find a player worthy of keeping one of the most storied last names in program history on the court.

2021 Ribet Academy (Calif.) wing Tyler Powell wrapped up his recruitment on Saturday night, committing to the Pirates over Nevada and Pepperdine. Seton Hall extended an offer to Powell on July 2 and all he needed was just over a month to feel comfortable enough to commit to Kevin Willard and his coaching staff. A three-star recruit according to Rivals, Powell also received interest from Colorado, Grand Canyon, Long Beach State, New Mexico, TCU, San Diego State, Stanford, UAB, UC Irvine, UNLV, Utah State and Washington State prior to committing.

Powell, who plays on the Nike EYBL circuit for Team Why Not, transferred from St. Bernard to Ribet as a sophomore and made an immediate impact at his new school, leading the Fightin’ Frogs to their CIF Division IV state championship in 28 years. Ribet once again reached a CIF state championship game in 2020, this time in Division I, but the game was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With Powell leading the way, Ribet finished the 2019-20 season with a 30-3 record and ranked No. 6 nationally and No. 3 in California according to MaxPreps.

As it turns out, one of Powell’s mentors has ties to Seton Hall. Former Pirates Pookey Wigington is an assistant on Ribet’s coaching staff. Wigington was a reserve guard for Seton Hall for two seasons and was a member of the Pirates’ 1988-89 Final Four team coached by PJ Carlesimo.

Powell. who was recruited by Kevin Willard and lead recruiter Grant Billmeier joins three-star Dulaney (Md.) Ryan Conway as the second member of Seton Hall’s 2021 recruiting class. The Pirates now have three open scholarships remaining for the 2021-22 season.
