NOTES YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Seton Hall, ranked No. 25 in this week’s USA Today Coaches Poll, is riding a four-game win streak, its longest of the season and currently the second-longest in the BIG EAST.
- The Hall is looking to start 3-0 in league play for just the fourth time in its history (2017-18, 1998-99, 1992-93). The Pirates went to the NCAA Tournament in two of those three seasons and won at least one game.
- Seton Hall is 2-0 in the BIG EAST for the third-consecutive season and the fifth time in the last six years.
- The Hall is also looking to begin with a 2-0 record in conference road games for just the second time in the BIG EAST Era (1999-00). The 1999-00 squad started the year 3-0 in conference road games.
INSIDE THE SERIES: XAVIER
- Seton Hall is 11-9 all-time against Xavier in a series that dates back to 1948.
- In BIG EAST games, the Hall is 7-6 against the Musketeers.
- The Pirates split the 2018-19 season series against Xavier with each team winning on the road.
- The Hall is 2-4 all-time at the Cintas Center with wins coming on Feb. 1, 2014 (68-60) and Jan. 2, 2019 (80-70).
MP13 NAMED BIG EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
- Myles Powell was named BIG EAST Player of the Week (1/6/20) after averaging 21.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.5 spg and 3.5 apg in a pair of league wins for Seton Hall.
- Powell returned from a two-game absence by scoring 18 of his 27 points in the second half in a 74-66 win at DePaul. He also had five steals.
- In a 78-62 victory over Georgetown, Powell scored 15 points, dealt six assists and scored eight points in a late 10-0 run to help secure the win.
- Powell has been named Player of the Week twice this season and four times in his career, one shy of tying Terry Dehere (1989-93) for most in program history (five).
IT STARTS WITH DEFENSE
- When Seton Hall is at its best, it’s playing hard nosed defense that the program was built upon.
- Currently, the Pirates rank seventh in the nation in KenPom’s defensive efficiency rankings.
- The Pirates’ propensity to block shots has helped their cause as they average 6.1 blocks per contest, a clip that leads the BIG EAST and ranks 10th in the country.
- In the KenPom Era (2001-02 – present), Seton Hall twice has finished in the top 15 in defensive efficiency and both have happened under head coach Kevin Willard (10th in 2010-11 and 2015-16).
- A trend this season has been the Pirates’ ability to hold their opponents below their season scoring average, which has happened in each of the last 11 games.
- Opponents have scored 10 or more points below their season scoring average in six of Seton Hall’s 10 wins this season including the last four games:
