Sorry to post on the BB forum but I'm under a bit of pressure and need a quick answer..

My dear sister will have major surgery at Sloan Kettering on Monday. I expect to fly into Newark Airport where I've booked a room, but it's been many years since I lived in the area and I am hopeful some of you can tell me the best way from the airport into the city and then on to the hospital on East 67th. Thanks for your help.

Hope everything works out for your sister she's at a great hospital.

There are several ways to get to NYC by public transportation. You can take an Air Express bus directly into Mid-Town and then take a cab to the hospital.

You can take the Air Train from the Airport to Penn Station in Newark and then a NJ Transit train to Penn Station , NYC and then a cab . Of course the subway is always an option in NY but you would need a far better expert then me to help you with that.

depending on what you're more comfortable with you have a couple options

if you're going back and forth from the hospital at odd hours you may want to rent a car because parking is easy up there, and it will be faster (taking turnpike to GW) than taking mass transit. ive driven to sloan dozens and dozens of times so im speaking from experience.

if you prefer to take mass transit, you can take nj transit from newark airport to penn station. then hop on the F train and walk a few blocks to the hospital.

thoughts and prayers with your family right now

Thinking of you and your sister. I see lots os passengers on the train which started it's own station for the airport years ago.

It depends on where you are staying. If you are staying in Manhattan I would simply take a cab to your hotel and cab back and forth from the hospital. If you are not used to driving in the city (I am but folks who have not done so in a while may not want to) and don't like driving in a crowded aggressive atmosphere then let someone else do the driving. From Newark airport take the AirTran to Penn Station in Newark and then to Penn Station in NY (it does not take very long at all).

If you are staying outside the city then I'd rent a car and deal with the traffic. Really depends on where you are staying I think.

Best of luck to your sister and to your family!

Try to avoid driving. Forget cabs, if you can avoid it. Manhattan traffic is worse than ever.

If you take the bus to Port Authority, take the Lexington Ave. line to the 68th St./Hunter College station. It's the closest subway station.

You will have to walk 4-5 blocks west. (Long NYC blocks.) If you don't have walking challenges and the weather is favorable, then walk.

If you can somehow change your flight to LaGuardia, you'd be a lot closer.

Sorry about your sister, but I'm glad she's in the best cancer hospital in the world.

Good luck and prayers to your family.

Which Sloan Kettering? There are a few different locations. Do you have an address?

aren't you very old, to be blunt? i don't think you guys should be giving any advice other than getting a taxi/car service or renting a car yourself if you want to do the drive. taking PT from Newark all the way to the far east side of midtown to get to Sloan will be a major pain in the ass.

not sure how long you will be traveling back and forth into city, but keep in mind the pope will be in NYC starting Thursday which will make commuting via car a nightmare.

Best of luck to you and your sister.

Thank you all for your good wishes; at this point they are far more important, far more appreciated than any directions to Sloan.
Yes, I told my sister that she couldn't have picked a worst week to have surgery :). Every hotel in the city including those w/Sloan discounts is a minimum of $400 a night. LaGuardia would have been my first choice but the hotels there, too, are outrageous this week. So getting a decent rate at a Hilton at EWR is worth the inconvenience of travel into town.

Again, God bless you for your kind thoughts. I knew I could count on you guys.

Belluno I've met your sister a few times. I hope and pray that the surgery went well.

Tom, it's been quite a few years since we last met, but your kind thoughts and prayers have closed the gap. Thank you more than words can say I am happy to report that the surgery went quite well. Her biggest concern is getting home to her terminally Ill husband. Life can be tough but ultimately a strong faith in God will be rewarded Again, thanks to you aND all the othere who prayed for her .
