WSJ graphic detailing how the 20 finalists for the second Amazon HQ stack up against each other lists prominent local colleges and includes both Seton Hall and Rutgers for Newark. Wondering what people's thoughts are on the chances Newark wins the bid and how positive or negative the effects would be for the city/area overall?

If Bezos is in love with bringing lots of jobs to a really crowded area with tons of air traffic already I'd welcome it. But for those reasons I don't think Newark has a realistic shot. Too crowded and congested, too much air traffic already and a highly unionized, high cost of living area. Just doesn't add up I'm afraid.

On the other thread some areas that I think have more of a shot include Austin, Boston, Pittsburgh, Columbus OH.

While I would love to see Newark win, I don't think it has much of a shot. Liberty airport is close, but it's really a terrible drawing card.

You can make the case that:
1- The talent pool within 20 miles is pretty significant and Newark is a transit hub. No need to relocate people into the market.
2- employees don't necessarily have to live in Newark, but it does give you a base of employees where developers will invest in residential properties.
3- Amazon already has a base of several thousand employees within 75 miles of Newark.
4- NJ/NY universities for future talent.
5- and of course the Devils and Seton Hall play at the Rock!!!

My understanding is that Newark has a fairly good chance to get the Amazon deal done. I hope they do get it. It would be a major boost to the economy of this area.

Reactions: Section112
Positives for Newark:
East coast / close to other major cities
Close to transportation hubs
Quality of workers
Amazon division audible.com already HQ in Newark
Tax Incentives being offered by NJ

Negatives:
High cost of living
Congestion
Available land
cost to build
Newark not top notch city

Think they will consider Newark as I expect to be near east coast, but as others have mentioned think Pittsburgh, Atlanta or Philadelphia are top choices

I don't think the congestion piece is that big a deal. Newark is a train transportation hub so there are a lot of real options into the city. Don't have to drive and you can also pull on the pool of labor from New York City via train as well.… Reverse commute for some.

And even know Newark doesn't have much pizzazz, any relocating employees have the lure of working 15 minutes from the World Trade Center via path. As I said earlier, they already have a significant base of employees in the region.

Would be nice to have them as a sponsor for the Pirates!!!

I see the air congestion as an issue in Newark. Most heavily used airspace in the US competing with LGA and JFK. It's possible they run their flights in the middle of the night which would certainly help but I see that as a major issue. I fly a lot and talk to pilots and they love to complain about how tough it is to deal with the air traffic controllers in this area and how crowded the skies are here. Maybe it's different for freight shipping? I hope Newark gets it though because it would certainly help the economy here.

I could be wrong but I think the project in question is for corporate offices not freight shipping. Amazon already has warehouse facilities for freight delivery in many states including one in Avenel, NJ.& another in Robbinsville, NJ.
