Giants will open 2021 NFL season against Broncos

By Ryan Dunleavy

The Giants will start the season against their old coach, not their hated rival.

To the disappointment of fans who are champing at the bit for a shot at the Eagles, the Giants will open the season at home Sept. 12 against the Broncos, a source told The Post. Pat Shurmur, who was 9-23 as Giants head coach in 2018-19 before he was replaced by Joe Judge, is the Broncos offensive coordinator.

Now the big question: Will Aaron Rodgers be making his Broncos debut at MetLife Stadium? Denver is thought to be one of the leading landing spots if the Packers reverse course and trade their disgruntled quarterback.

The Giants faced the Broncos on the road on “Monday Night Football” on Sept. 10, 2001. Twenty years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Broncos are traveling east on the same weekend.

Giants fans have to wait until Week 12 to boo the Eagles, whose questionable effort in a Week 17 loss to Washington last season kept the Giants out of the playoffs and drew Judge’s wrath. Since then, coach Doug Pederson was fired, but Nov. 28 — the end of Thanksgiving weekend — still will be circled on the calendars.

The Eagles also stoked the flames of the rivalry just two weeks ago by trading up with the Cowboys in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft to jump in front of the Giants for receiver DeVonta Smith. The Giants pivoted with a smart trade that landed them a future first-round pick and receiver Kadarius Toney.

The Giants-Cowboys Week 1 matchup that had become tradition is now on a two-year hiatus and hasn’t happened three of the last four years. The Giants opened against the Cowboys in 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019, with all but one of those games at AT&T Stadium.

The Cowboys will visit the Giants in Week 15 on Dec. 19. It is not known when the Giants will face the Eagles and Cowboys on the road.

The NFL will announce every team’s entire schedule Wednesday night, but the complete Week 1 schedule is expected to be announced by individual television networks during regular morning programming.

Jets will open NFL season with Sam Darnold revenge game

By Brian Costello

Sam Darnold started the Jets’ season opener in each of the last three seasons. Now, he will be facing them in Week 1.

The Jets will open the season at 1 p.m. on Sept. 12 in Carolina against the Panthers and Darnold, whom the Jets traded to Carolina last month.

It will be the debut of Jets coach Robert Saleh, and also is expected to be the first start for rookie quarterback Zach Wilson.

All of that will be overshadowed by the matchup with Darnold, though. The Jets took the 23-year-old with the No. 3 overall pick in 2018 to be their franchise quarterback. Things did not go smoothly in his three years with the Jets, and general manager Joe Douglas decided to move on.

He traded Darnold to the Panthers for three draft picks, including a 2022 second-round pick on April 6. The Jets then drafted Wilson to replace Darnold with the No. 2 overall pick in last month’s 2021 NFL Draft

Here is the New York Giants’ 2021 home schedule

By Ryan Dunleavy

Old NFC East rivalries head to the back of the line.

The Giants’ eight-game home schedule in 2021 includes five games before any of the three teams inside their division visit MetLife Stadium, league sources told The Post. And there are no Monday or Thursday primetime home games included this year.

The Eagles are up first in Week 12 (Nov. 29), followed by the Cowboys in Week 15 (Dec. 19) and the Washington Football Team in the newly added Week 18 finale (Jan. 9). So, what comes first?

After opening the season against the Broncos at home on Sept. 12 (4:25 p.m. on FOX), the Giants will host the Falcons in Week 3 (Sept. 26), the Rams in Week 6 (Oct. 17), the Panthers in Week 7 (Oct. 24), and the Raiders in Week 9 (Nov. 7).

Only one of those first five home opponents (Rams) made the playoffs last season, giving the Giants a chance to start much faster than in years past. Since last making the playoffs in 2016, the Giants have finished the first half of the season with records of 1-7 three times and 2-6 the other.

The Giants will play under the lights against both Super Bowl teams from last season, according to NorthJersey.com, which reported road games against the Buccaneers and Chiefs are scheduled for primetime. The report also mentioned a Week 16 game at the Eagles.

The Giants have a quick Week 1 turnaround to a “Thursday Night Football” at Washington Week 2, according to multiple reports. That leaves only six unknowns on the schedule: visits to the Bears, Cowboys, Chargers, Dolphins and Saints, plus the bye week.

This is the first year of the expanded 17-game schedule.

NFL television partners announced the Week 1 games as part of regularly scheduled morning programming, and FOX confirmed the Giants-Broncos Week 1 opener that includes the return of former Giants head coach Pat Shurmur as Broncos offensive coordinator.

It could include Aaron Rodgers’ debut with the Broncos, if the Packers change direction and decide to trade their disgruntled future Hall of Fame quarterback.

The Broncos and Raiders are said to be among the leading candidates to land Rodgers in such a scenario, so perhaps he is coming to MetLife Stadium one way or another if he doesn’t resolve his differences in Green Bay.

This marks just the third time since 2012 that the Giants won’t face the Cowboys in one of the first two weeks of the season.

Jets heading to London to play Falcons in 2021 NFL season

By Brian Costello

The Jets will be traveling overseas in 2021.

The team will face the Falcons on Oct. 10 in London at 9:30 a.m. The game is a Falcons home game.

This will be the first time the Jets have played in England since 2015 when they defeated the Dolphins there.

Jets owner Woody Johnson served as the ambassador to the United Kingdom from 2017-21 under former President Donald Trump. Johnson returned to the United States in January and resumed his duties with the Jets.

Other games we know:

The Jets will open the season in Carolina against the Panthers at 1 p.m. on Sept. 12.

The Jets will be in primetime on Nov. 4 at the Colts on “Thursday Night Football,” according to a source.

Jets’ full schedule for 2021 NFL season

By Brian Costello

The NFL clearly believes the Jets are not ready for primetime.

Following a 2-14 season in 2020, Gang Green only has one game in primetime in the upcoming season. They face the Colts on Nov. 4 on “Thursday Night Football.” The rest of their schedule consists of 1 p.m. games, one 9:30 a.m. start and one 4:05 p.m. start.

The Jets travel to London for the first time since 2015 to face the Falcons on Oct. 10. Other highlights of the schedule are the Week 1 matchup with Sam Darnold, Zach Wilson vs. Trevor Lawrence on Dec. 26 when the Jaguars visit and the season finale in Buffalo on Jan. 9.

Here is the full slate, according to sources:

Week 1: at Panthers

Sept. 12, 1 p.m., CBS

The Sam Darnold revenge angle will be out of control leading into this one, but there are other interesting storylines. This will be the debut of new coach Robert Saleh and most likely quarterback Zach Wilson. Robby Anderson faces the Jets for the first time and Matt Rhule, whom the Jets nearly hired in 2019, will be on the other sideline.

Week 2 vs. Patriots

Sept. 19, 1 p.m., CBS

Bill Belichick faces another Jets coach, getting his first look at Saleh in this one. The fascinating question here is one we have not asked many times in the last two decades: Who will the Patriots quarterback be? Can rookie Mac Jones win the job or will it be Cam Newton?

Week 3 at Broncos

Sept. 26, 4:05 p.m., CBS

With no NFL teams in Utah, this is as close to home as Wilson will get in his rookie season. The Broncos won this battle of bad teams in 2020. This will be a good measuring stick for the Jets to see how much they have improved in a year.

Week 4 vs. Titans

Oct. 3, 1 p.m., CBS

This game would have been more fun if Adam Gase was still the Jets coach and he was facing quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Instead, we’ll get to see how Saleh’s defense stacks up against Derrick Henry and Co. New Jets wide receiver Corey Davis gets to face his former team.

Week 5 at Falcons (in London)

Oct. 10, 9:30 a.m., NFL Network

Woody Johnson just finished his term as ambassador to the United Kingdom and now his team is headed for England. The Jets will get to see rookie tight end Kyle Pitts up close. He would have been a candidate for them to draft at No. 2 if they had stuck with Darnold.

Week 6 — BYE

Week 7 at Patriots

Oct. 24, 1 p.m., CBS

The Jets are done with the rival Patriots fairly early this season with the second meeting coming before Halloween. We should have a good feel for who the Jets are as a team by this point and a win over the Patriots would go a long way. The Jets have not won in Foxborough since the 2010 playoffs.

Week 8 vs. Bengals

Oct. 31, 1 p.m., CBS

Playing a team whose colors are orange and black on Halloween? That could be trouble for the Jets. This could be a fun shootout between young quarterbacks Wilson and Joe Burrow. New Jets defensive end Carl Lawson will be fired up to face his former team.

Week 9 at Colts

Nov. 4, 8:20 p.m., FOX

The Jets’ lone primetime appearance comes against Carson Wentz and the Colts. The Jets scored a big primetime win in Indianapolis in 2015 that sparked a 10-6 season. A win here would be huge and could propel the Jets in the second half of the season.

Week 10 vs. Bills

Nov. 14, 1 p.m., CBS

The Jets don’t see the defending AFC East champions until late in the year. Buffalo has zoomed past the Jets through effective team building in recent years. The Jets are now chasing the Bills and this will be a chance to see if they have gotten any closer.

Week 11 vs. Dolphins

Nov. 21, 1 p.m., CBS

It is division games in back-to-back weeks for the Jets after only seeing the Patriots early in the season. This is the first potential matchup between Tua Tagovailoa and Wilson, which could be a quarterback battle for years in the division.

Week 12 at Texans

Nov. 28, 1 p.m., CBS

Who knows what Houston will look like for this game? Deshaun Watson’s future is still very murky between his trade demand and his legal issues. Chances are this game will be quarterbacked by someone else. This is a chance for a road win for the Jets.

Week 13 vs. Eagles

Dec. 5, 1 p.m., CBS

The Jets have never beaten the Eagles, going 0-11 against Philadelphia all-time. This should be a weak Eagles team and maybe the Jets have a chance to snap that skid. Quinnen Williams gets a chance to hit his college teammate from Alabama, quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Week 14 vs. Saints

Dec. 12, 1 p.m., FOX

The Jets let linebacker Demario Davis go twice. He has blossomed into one of the best linebackers in football in New Orleans. Now, Davis returns to MetLife Stadium to show his old team what a mistake it made.

Week 15 at Dolphins

Dec. 18 or 19, TBD

Miami in December? Yes, please. Maybe you don’t care how about my personal feelings here. For the Jets, they are going to have to prove they can hang with the other division teams to be taken seriously. Brian Flores has the Dolphins heading in the right direction. Saleh needs to show his team can compete.

Week 16 vs. Jaguars

Dec. 26, 1 p.m., CBS

The dream for most Jets fans last season was to land the No. 1 pick in the Draft and take quarterback Trevor Lawrence. That dream died last December with two wins. This December, Jets fans get to see Lawrence, who ended up in Jacksonville with new coach Urban Meyer.

Week 17 vs. Buccaneers

Jan. 2, 1 p.m. FOX

The Super Bowl champions come to MetLife Stadium late in the season. It will be the first time Todd Bowles, Tampa’s defensive coordinator, faces the Jets since the team fired him after the 2018 season. It is also another chance for Tom Brady to torment the Jets, something he did for 20 years in New England.

Week 18 at Bills

Jan. 9, 1 p.m. CBS

Buffalo in January? No thanks. Sorry, there I go again. It has been a long time since the final game of the season meant anything for the Jets. You have to go back to 2015 in Buffalo. If this one has playoff implications, the Jets have played much better than expected and the Saleh/Wilson era has gotten off to a great start.

Giants’ full schedule for 2021 NFL season

By Paul Schwartz

The Giants open and close their 2021 season at home, play three primetime games — including two “Monday Night Football” road games against the mighty Chiefs and Buccaneers — and get a bye week near midseason in Joe Judge’s second year as head coach.

Like snowbirds, the Giants in the back-end of the season get to leave the cold for the warmth of Florida. They have a rough stretch early (at New Orleans, at Dallas, vs. the Rams) and face NFC East opponents three times in their last four games.

Here is the full slate:

Week 1: vs. Broncos

Sept. 12

Giants get to open up at home against a team that went 5-11 in 2020. Will it be Drew Lock, or perhaps Aaron Rodgers at quarterback? Denver’s offensive coordinator, Pat Shurmur, went 9-23 in two dismal seasons (2018 and 2019) as the Giants’ head coach. Revenge game? Nah, probably not.

Week 2: at Washington

Sept. 16

It’s a quick turnaround for the Giants with this Thursday night primetime game, but it’s a short train ride to Landover, Md., so that helps. Giants won at FedEx Field in 2020 — Joe Judge’s first NFL victory. This could be Ryan Fitzpatrick running the show on offense, at 38 years old, which would be the fifth different starting quarterback in the past five home openers for Washington.

Week 3: vs. Falcons

Sept. 26

This will be a good chance to see just how mighty the Giants’ defensive backfield actually is, going against uber-talented tight end Kyle Pitts, the Falcons’ first-round draft pick. Can newly signed CB Adoree’ Jackson handle this assignment? This will be labeled a home game the Giants need to win, considering the Falcons are coming off a dreadful 4-12 season.

Week 4: at Saints

Oct. 3

It won’t be Eli Manning and Drew Brees slinging it around inside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, so Daniel Jones vs. Jameis Winston (or Taysom Hill) will have to suffice. Giants first-round pick Kadarius Toney says he models some of his game after Alvin Kamara and the Giants hope some of that elusiveness rubs off on the rookie wide receiver.

Week 5: at Cowboys

Oct. 10

The last time the Giants played inside AT&T Stadium, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott went down in the third quarter on a perfectly legal tackle by Logan Ryan, lost for the remainder of the season with a compound ankle fracture and dislocation. Nearly a year to the day later, Prescott, healed, takes aim at the Giants again.

Week 6: vs. Rams

Oct. 17

The Giants hung in with the Rams in Week 4 last season but could not generate a single touchdown in a 17-9 loss, indicative of the defensive fortitude and offensive doldrums that characterized their entire 2020 campaign. Yes, that is Matt Stafford now playing quarterback for the Rams.

Week 7: vs. Panthers

Oct. 24

Lots and lots of connections here. Dave Gettleman was the Panthers’ general manager from 2013-17. James Bradberry is a former Carolina cornerback. New Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold used to play that position for the other NFL team that calls MetLife Stadium home. And, lest we forget, Matt Rhule, and not Judge, likely would have been the Giants head coach had he not been blown over by a $60 million contract to work in Charlotte.

Week 8: at Chiefs

Nov. 1

You want to be the best, you have to beat the best. But on “Monday Night Football” at Arrowhead Stadium, one of the loudest buildings in the league? Good luck with that. Everyone knows how great Patrick Mahomes is and a national television audience gets to see if defensive coordinator Patrick Graham has the goods to slow down this greatness.

Week 9: vs. Raiders

Nov. 7

The last time these teams squared off was late in the 2017 season, in Oakland, the infamous Geno Smith in, Eli Manning out fiasco that remains a franchise lowlight. This time, the Raiders fly in from Las Vegas and the Giants (Jabrill Peppers) need to contend with pass-catching terror tight end Darren Waller.

Week 10: Bye

Week 11: at Buccaneers

Nov. 22

The Giants last season battled Tom Brady and the Bucs down to the wire on “Monday Night Football,” losing 25-23, so why not run it back again, this time on a Monday night in Tampa? Coming off their bye, the Giants get extra time and rest to prepare for the defending Super Bowl champs. They’ll need it.

Week 12: vs. Eagles

Nov. 28

Giants fans have to wait until Thanksgiving weekend to berate the despised Eagles, who tanked their 2020 regular-season finale to keep the Giants out of the playoffs, a maneuver that played into head coach Doug Pederson losing his job. The Eagles also traded up over the Giants in the NFL Draft to take Alabama WR DeVonta Smith, the player the Giants would have taken at No. 11.

Week 13: at Dolphins

Dec. 5

Dolphins head coach Brian Flores worked with Judge on the Patriots’ staff and they are building their teams in their own images. The Giants loved Jaylen Waddle and the Alabama yards-after-catch maven went No. 6 overall, reuniting with college teammate Tua Tagovailoa. Can one of their former Crimson Tide teammates, Xavier McKinney, help the Giants slow them down?

Week 14: at Chargers

Dec. 12

Justin Herbert at times was sensational as a rookie quarterback in 2020 and now he has Rashawn Slater — an offensive lineman the Giants passed over in the NFL Draft — blocking for him. This will be a good indication of how much progress Daniel Jones has shown in year No. 3, compared with how Herbert is playing in his second NFL season.

Week 15: vs. Cowboys

Dec. 19

The last time these teams played in New Jersey, both were alive for the division title in the moribund NFC East. The Giants eliminated the Cowboys 23-19, ending a seven-game losing streak. There were no fans in the building for that game, though. To prevent a Dallas fan invasion, the Giants need to be in playoff contention this late in the season.

Week 16: at Eagles

Dec. 26

There is no more gruesome House of Horrors for the Giants than Lincoln Financial Field. The Giants have lost eight consecutive games in Philly and they’ve blown a double-digit lead to lose in three straight seasons. You name it, the Giants do it wrong on Pattison Ave.

Week 17: at Bears

Jan. 2

This is an interesting one. The Giants facilitated the Bears nabbing Justin Fields in the NFL Draft, trading down from No. 11 to No. 20. Is Fields this late in the season an established starting quarterback or a struggling rookie? The Giants own the Bears’ 2022 first-round pick, so inflicting a loss at Soldier Field is a win-win.

Week 18: vs. Washington

Jan. 9

Will this matchup have playoff implications for either team? If so, the Giants get a break with a regular-season finale at home, where it figures to be cold for both sides and extremely inhospitable for the visiting team.
