Seton Hall MBB retweeted Fran Fraschilla

Scored 1,651 points in his Pirates career & averaged a whopping 27.5 points a game as a senior in 1979! #PiratePride

If someone at the Naismith Hall of Fame was on top of it, Greece's (and former Seton Hall star) Nick Galis would be in by now. Seriously.

When the Trove interviewed his teammate and former SHU great Greg Tynes (2059 points) he told us that the most difficult player he ever guarded was Galis (in practice).

Hell of a backcourt with Galis and Tynes. What people don't recognize about Nick was how strong and physical he was.

The distance from the program when I started school in 1971 to when Galis, Tynes and Mosley were together in the late 70s was immense. I didn't see any games in '76 but went back to campus in 77, and the team was at another level.

Wish I had seen Galis play more. Saw Greg Tynes in his frosh year and he was terrific right off the bat.

And of course Mosley was a game changer from Day One.

Wish I remember more of a win over RU at MSG in the late 70s, but I did a lot of celebrating early, just in case we won...Anyone remember what year that was? 77/78 season seems about right.

I was at that game. it was wild. Not sure if '77 or '78. It was a game of runs. It was Mosley vs Bailey. Rutgers went up by double digits mid way thru 2nd half and then all of a sudden The Pirates went on a phenomenal run led by Tynes and won by double digits going away.

If I remember right John Ramsey hit a big shot down the stretch of that game to Beat the Abdul Anderson,James Bailey Knights.

Was that Rutgers team ranked? Must have bee. Some matchup, Bailey vs Mosley...Those teams in the 70s made me a Pirate fan for life....I was at American U and saw Pirates vs Georgetown at McDonough with Calandrillo, a frosh at the pt, and Gaelis at the othe spot. Nick scored the quietest 35+pts I ever saw, so effortless and he made just about every shot he took. Outplayed John Duren, but the Hoyas had too much depth and scoring.

If you listed the most explosive Pirates, Gaelis would have to be near the top.....Remember Tynes replacing Paul Lape after he left the team early that season. It was Tynes freshman year and boy did he deliver. To me, St John's was the bigger rival than Rutgers then, but that could just be me. How many years did Glenn Mosley hold the record for blocks in one defeat at Walsh of the Johnnies, a borderline top 20 team if not ranked. Sam D broke it years later, I believe. Really fun teams to watch and listen to on radio ..... Tynes loved to use glass from the key, an amazingly soft shot. Great era. Eastern basketball was just about to flex its muscle with the soon to be formed Big East. The Eastern 8 had great hoops, too. Stream of consciousness lives!

Good question for Dan to ask sometime, which were the top 3 back courts from 1970 to today.
Kevin Boyle & John Sealey right behind Tynes, Gallis, Callandrillo trio. Oh wait, PJ drove them both off so we'll never know and can only speculate (he said tongue in cheek).

It was a game of wild swings. RU took a double digit lead at the start but SHU was in front at half time. RU scored the first 17 points of the 2nd half but SHU stormed back with Mosley on the bench in foul trouble. Pete Jeremich subbing for Mosley had a career game but it was Nick Galis who had a breakout game to lead all scorers with about 26 points outplaying Eddie Jordan. Seton Hall won pulling away to about a 12 point victory.

I also recall some questionable Pirate fans accusing me of making too much noise with that old air horn that I used to bring to games.

Both SHU & RU had very good teams that year and MSG was packed with about 17,000 fans. I don't recall who played in the other half of the double header but it was clearly a New Jersey crowd.

Than it was the 75 game at the garden.
RU had Sellers et al as jrs in 75 and they handled us pretty easily I think. The SHU web site used to have the scores of every game we ever played, but it looks like that has been lost.

SnakeTom should have the answer to this.

The game in question was Glen Mosley's Senior year. Sellers & Dabney were gone by then. RU was led by Bailey,Jordan & Hollis Copeland. Nick Galis was a Soph & Greg Tynes a junior. It was the 1976-77 season. The final score was Seton Hall 89 - Rutgers 75.

The John Ramsey game was in the 1974-75 season. We lost 81-89 in the Holiday Festival despite Ramsey's hot shooting.. That Rutgers team featured Sellers, Dabney & Jordan.

Tynes and Gaelis played together longer than DannyC and Gaelis, so Greg and Nick would have to get that nod....I'd go with those two as a top three combo. Sha and Rimas would also rank. I didnt see Dehere play much, but him and whoever he played with would have to win, place or show...That must have been one very good Pirate team that handled Bailey and RU. Maybe the same year, I remember one garden doubleheader with Bailey just dominating a vg UNLV team and in the other game, a young coach at Wagner beating a nationally ranked Louisville team with the McCray brothers. Had to be PJ's first ever back page headline, called the wood or black line, on the sports page of the NY Daily News.
