The NIT is littered with teams out to prove something (Being slighted for the Big Dance) or those that mail it in. Really tough to bet. Having our Pirates in along with the loathed Little Red School House sets up for some fascinating watching. Do the undermanned Pirates step up in a tough situation (Short turnaround, travel, late night starting time - paging KW)? Does Rut want to send a message or go quietly into the night against Speedy's guys? It's anyone's guess. Teams respond differently like Xavier making a run to the title with an interim coach. The NIT used to be about setting the stage for the next season with a team that grows up in tourney play. The portal has changed all that. What's your prediction on who shows up and who no shows?

I’m not a big fan of celebrating mediocrity with all these other tournaments. I’m lukewarm at best on the NIT, but yeah of course I’ll be following if we’re playing. Is it an accomplishment to make the NIT? I guess we can frame it that way because only 100/363 teams are in either Tournament, but who really cares if you’re not in the NCAA Tournament? Like if we win it, do we hang a banner at The Rock? Seems weird.

This year’s SHU team was mediocre in all ways. I would’ve been fine with the season ending after that embarrassment against DePaul. We have a lot of work to do to take the next step. Continuity will be a plus as that is proving to be more important than experience in this day and age in most cases. Especially with a first-year HC. Is playing in the NIT helpful for that? I guess.

I think it is really great that a team which was undermanned all season due to injuries and having a first year new coach is still playing ball. Excited for the players who never want the season to end and happy for the fan base that supports the team.
Go Pirates!

Holloway’s First year, 3 portal starters, an up and down season. If we can somehow find a way to win the NIT it will make for a happier and somewhat promising offseason

It will be nice but offseason is all about bringing in players. I'm most concerned about who is playing the 4 and 5 next year. Losing Ndefo is a big loss considering we're not a big team to begin with. Jackson and Samuel are both 4th year guys, they can graduate and leave. Are the Davis brothers back? A lot of questions.

Under Gonzo and Willard our teams never showed up in the NIT. I am curious to see if we show up hungry under Sha.

As long as we are playing, I will be rooting and following.
Let's go Pirates.

The 2012 team showed up by winning a game, but against UMass, I said uh oh as soon as Herb Pope hoisted up an immediate lazy 3 pointer from the corner that was in no way within the flow of the offense

I’ve changed my tune since the DePaul loss and now am looking forward to more basketball, even if it’s in the “Not Invited Tournament.” Let’s go win a few more games and leave on a high note. We didn’t make the big dance. Time to move on and gear up for a tough Colorado matchup.

I believe we have to appreciate how far Seton Hall has come back as a program in the last 8 years.. After being dormant before that for many years The Hall is on an NCAA/NIT level every year. In addition we have had a few players go to the NBA during that time period. Plus, lower bowl sellouts are not a big deal anymore. This year’s team was not great and they are still in the NIT. Seton Hall has some brand recognition and are a respectable program again. Expectations are higher and getting an NIT invite doesn’t satisfy the fanbase. That’s a good thing. Much more work to do. Hopefully, a good NIT and more important, recruiting cycle.

I’ve gotten so used to hearing our name called on Selection Sunday that yesterday was depressing as all hell. Let’s take this setback and make it the last one for a while. The NCAA Tournament should be our standard. We’re better than this. We’ve come too far as a program to accept anything less.

Nor under Blaney or Amaker. Even for Raftery, when the NIT was a huge accomplishment for us, no success.

We’ve been at a good level, absolutely. Cannot have more than a one-off year though. Making the NCAA Tournament should be our annual goal. Yes, obviously you want to push forward there. Getting there and losing isn’t fun, not getting there at all is worse. If you look at the past 8 seasons we would’ve made it 6 times (2016-20, 22) and the two we missed were both collapses, IMO (We were 10-5 in the BE in 2021 and finished 10-9, obviously 8-5 this year and finished 10-10).

Secondly, it is not easy to get there regularly! We had a run where we should’ve made 5 consecutive NCAA Tournaments from 2016-20, a first in our program’s history. We had a few threads at the time talking about how rare even making just 4 consecutive was nationally.

Of 363 national programs only 9 have streaks of 4 years or longer right now. And of those 9, you have these behemoths at the top like Kansas, Michigan State, and Gonzaga who are all like 25+ years. This year alone you saw the end of UNC (11), Villanova (9) and Michigan (6), and VA Tech (5). It’s hard to do.
