NJ gas tax onward and upward

Another tax you can thank Phil Murphy for, with an assist to Chris Christie as well.

Shu09 to be fair, NJ road conditions were not budgeted well for years so it 2016 christie had to do something...nj gas tax has been among the lowest in the country up to a handful of years ago

Under the 2016 law that replenished the state’s Transportation Trust Fund, an annual review of New Jersey's gas tax rate is required by the state treasurer. If the gas tax doesn't generate $2 billion a year for the state’s Transportation Trust Fund, which pays for road repairs and mass transit, an increase is required to make up the deficit. A shortfall in revenue resulted in an additional 4-cent increase in 2018, bringing the current tax rate to 41.4 cents per gallon and the diesel fuel tax at 48.4 cents per gallon. (10th highest in the nation)

Yes, and it should have stayed that way. It was the one tax we have that is lower than average. No longer. We get bent over in this state time and time again and the sheep just sit here and take it.

It was a dumb law that has automatic triggers for tax increases. This is why I said assist to Christie, he pushed this through. If I remember correctly, it was a compromise to lower the sales tax to 6.625%, which Murphy will raise back to 7% (or greater) soon.

Glad I don’t drive. Haha

Glad I drive electric. ;)

That said, I don't love the idea of a gas tax. As people transition to more efficient vehicles they will contribute less and less... so the rate needs to keep increasing which puts a larger burden on the people who can't afford to get a more efficient car.

Ideally would be mileage based, but that has some issues as well.

Great point. In the end, this tax targets the working middle class who commute to work and can't afford to switch to hybrid or electric vehicles.

Ok shu09 why are most vehicles still gas vs electric/battery recharge?

I mean we knew decades ago that the emissoons are not safe for the enviroment.

Obviously work from home, unemployment and furlough all contributed to not as many and often vehicles on roads last 6 months. I know you will bury murphy for that.

Same time legitmately NJ has had issues with funding road projects, restorations for years and years...had to have something in place for default budget

Maybe if the politicians didn't raid the transportation trust fund to begin with, we wouldn't be talking about this.

I'll throw in a sales pitch for the one I have. Had been considering a Tesla model 3 and the deal on the Hyundai Ioniq electric was too good comparatively.

You can lease the 2020 base model for about $150 a month with nothing down at all in NJ because of the state rebate.
