South Orange, N.J. - The No. 15 ranked Seton Hall men's soccer looks to claim its first win in BIG EAST play when Marquette visits Owen T. Carroll Field on Friday. Game time is scheduled for 6:56 p.m.

This is the 19th all-time meeting between the two teams, the most recent of which being a 3-2 Seton Hall win at Valley Fields in 2022.

SCOUTING MARQUETTE
  • Marquette is 6-3-1 on the season with a 2-0-0 record in the BIG EAST.
  • Two of the Golden Eagles' three losses came against ranked opponents.

SERIES HISTORY
  • Seton Hall and Marquette last met on October 12, 2022, in what would be a back-and-forth match. The first half opened with Marquette's Edrey Caceres scoring first in the 8th minute from the top of the box. However, The Hall's Mattias Almeida Sundell responded in the 28th minute, securing a 1-1 scoreline heading into halftime. In the second half, Paavo Riihjarvi put the Pirates back in front with a 56th minute goal off of a Johannes Pex assist. The Golden Eagles went on to level the match in the 64th minute, but a 74th minute goal from Quenzi Huerman secured a 3-2 victory for the Pirates.
  • This is the 19th matchup between the two programs, the first of which came in 2005.
  • Seton Hall is 8-7-3 all-time against Marquette with a 4-1-0 record in their last five meetings.
PIRATES FIGHT TO SCORELESS DRAW AGAINST NO. 24 UCONN
  • On Saturday, Seton Hall traveled to Storrs, Connecticut, to face No. 24 UConn in the Pirates' second game of BIG EAST play. The Pirates drew the match 0-0.
  • Seton Hall goalkeeper Matias Molina registered his third clean sheet of the season.

  • The Hall had 10 total shots, compared to four for the Huskies.

  • In Head Coach Andreas Lindberg's tenure, Seton Hall appeared in the United Soccer Coaches top-25 seven times during the 2020 season, reaching as high as No. 6. Then Seton Hall spent four weeks in the national rankings during 2021.
  • The Pirates are one of two BIG EAST teams in the current top-25, the other being No. 21 Providence.
GUSKE CLAIMS BIG EAST WEEKLY AWARD
  • After playing a key role on a Pirate backline that held both opponents scoreless last week, junior Liam Guske (St. John's, Fla.) earned this week's BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week award.
  • Guske is the seventh Seton Hall men's soccer member to be honored by the conference this season.

No. 15 Pirates Claim BIG EAST Home Opener 1-0 Over Marquette​

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – A lone Jared Smith goal gave No. 15 Seton Hall men's soccer a 1-0 victory over Marquette in their BIG EAST home opener. This was the Pirates' first BIG EAST win of the season.

The first half was a stalemate before the Pirates' Jared Smith finished off a Seton Hall breakaway to put the team up 1-0. The Hall piled on the offensive pressure, finishing the first half with a 6-2 advantage in shots. The Golden Eagles flipped the script in the second half, including a near goal in the 71st minute. However, the Pirates' stout defense held strong and secured them the 1-0 victory.

With the win, Seton Hall moves to 8-1-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in BIG EAST play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half began as a midfield-heavy affair, but the Pirates pushed their advantage with two shots in the first six minutes. In the 35th minute, Jared Smith scored his team-leading third goal of the season on a rocket from outside the box. Til Kauschke assisted on the goal, earning his third assist of the season. The team pressed hard following the goal, finishing the first half with a 6-2 advantage in shots.

In the second half, Marquette put the Pirates' strong defense to the test immediately, registering two shots within the first five minutes. A dangerous 71st minute breakway by the Golden Eagles proved to be the opposition's best opportunity of the night, but the shot was driven off the post after goalkeeper Soren Jensen forced Marquette's Tim Smith to adjust his shot.

Jensen shut the door on the final Marquette opportunity of the night with a save in the 81st minute save. The Pirates held strong for the final nine minutes, securing the first BIG EAST victory of the season.
