OMAHA, NEB. - The No. 23 Seton Hall women's basketball team jumped out to a big lead early and held on to survive a furious rally late in an 86-82 victory at Creighton on Thursday afternoon at D.J. Sokol Arena. The Pirates (12-1, 2-0 BIG EAST) open BIG EAST play with back-to-back wins on the road for the first time since 2000-01 after the triumph over the Bluejays (6-8, 0-2 BIG EAST).
Tabatha Richardson-Smith (Bay City, Texas) led The Hall with a season-high 27 points, including an impressive 4-for-5 display from 3-point range. Shakena Richardson (Neptune, N.J.) added 18 points and seven assists, while Aleesha Powell (Philadelphia, Pa.) chipped in 14 including several clutch free throws down the stretch.
The Pirates held a 41-18 lead midway through the second quarter, but Creighton finished the first half strong to pull within 11 at the break. The Bluejays pulled even in the fourth quarter at 67-67, before the Pirates went on a 12-4 run to re-take the advantage. Seton Hall never trailed in the contest.
Turning Point
Creighton pulled within one twice in the final minute, but on consecutive possessions Aleesha Powell was able to deliver at the free throw line. Overall, Powell went 5-for-6 from the stripe in the final minute to help the Pirates hold off a late Bluejay charge.
