PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Four Pirates scored in double-figures as the Seton Hall women’s basketball team won its BIG EAST opener with a 64-54 victory at Providence on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Hall. The contest marked the start of conference play for both the Pirates (11-1, 1-0) and the Friars (4-7, 0-1).
Tabatha Richardson-Smith (Bay City, Texas) led all scorers with 16 points for the Pirates while Tiffany Jones (New York, N.Y.) turned in a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double. Shakena Richardson (Neptune, N.J.) added 12 points and a team-high five assists and Aleesha Powell (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished with 10 points.
The Pirates out-rebounded the Friars by 12 and out-scored PC 17-8 in the second quarter to take a nine-point lead to the break. The Hall went up by as many as 15 in the second half before a late Providence rally cut the deficit as close as six late in the fourth quarter before the Pirates closed out the victory.
Turning Point
After a 10-0 Providence run cut Seton Hall’s lead to six at 57-51 with under a minute to play in the fourth, Powell came up with a clutch lay-in with 55 seconds to play. The basket made it a three-possession game and effectively sealed the victory for the Pirates.
