No College 2020 Football?

I fully expect that they will play in the spring as the $ involved are too large. Many top players will skip but the conferences will get their tv money.

Commissioners of the Power 5 conferences held an emergency meeting on Sunday, as there is growing concern among college athletics officials that the upcoming football season and other fall sports can't be played because of the coronavirus pandemic, sources told ESPN

Even if the big 10 cancels I’m not quite sure it will cause the same chain reaction the Ivy League did when they canceled their conference championship last March. The SEC Commissioner said months ago that they will play even if they are the only conference doing it. and some Big 10 teams might even leave their conference for the season.

MWC announced it will play conference games + 2 non conference games starting late September.

NCAA ruling puts fall sports in real jeopardy

The college football season this fall is in serious jeopardy.

Commissioners of the Power 5 conference met Sunday night to discuss if the fall season could be played as health concerns grow amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Associated Press.

Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby told the AP that no decisions have been made, but said the outlook has not improved.

“Are we in a better place today than two weeks, ago?” he said. “No, we’re not.”

Bowlsby pointed to the data around “myocarditis” as a growing reason for concern.

Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart that has occurred in a number COVID-19 patients. It could have long-term complications for young, healthy people, should they contract the virus.

The Power 5 commissioner powwow comes after presidents from the Big Ten met on Saturday. The Big Ten is moving toward postponing their fall season and wanted to see if the ACC, SEC, Big 12 and Pac-12 would join them, according to reports. Notre Dame also would likely be included in this as the Fighting Irish were set to join the ACC for this season.

“I’ve been around our guys and they think it’s safe and they want to try and play,” Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said. “If we change course, we better be able to articulate the reason for doing so to our student-athletes. They are going to want to know why.”

The Big Ten presidents, who were expected to meet again Sunday night, are strongly leaning toward canceling the fall season and are close to making a decision, but not ready to make an announcement, according to Yahoo Sports. The league remains unsure what other conferences could join them once they make an official decision. The Big Ten season is scheduled to start Labor Day weekend.

“It’s gotten to a critical stage,” one conference commissioner told Sports Illustrated. “I think all of us will be meeting with our boards in the coming days. We have work to do that is no fun.”

The final decision lies with the university presidents from the larger conferences.

The shift toward punting on the season comes after the Big Ten, which includes Rutgers, announced Friday that fall sports would remain in the “first two days of the acclimatization period.” For football that meant workouts would only include helmets and no pads in light of health concerns. Friday also saw the MAC become the FBS conference to cancel its fall season.

Pac-12 presidents and chancellors are expected to meet Tuesday and ACC leaders have moved their meeting up to Monday, according to ESPN. Leaders of other FBS conferences are also reportedly scheduled to meet this week.

Louisiana Tech announced Sunday that it was pausing its football practice after five players tested positive for coronavirus and 13 more falling under contact-tracing measures. Many of the premier college football programs — including LSU and Clemson — saw dozens of players test positive for COVID-19 upon returning to campus and the virus remains prevalent throughout much of the country.

“I don’t even see how it’s real,” one Power 5 coach told The Post earlier this summer. “You are going to have 100-plus people in the locker room in close proximity. There is no way around that. If they are saying you can’t do that, I don’t see how we can operate when we are going to be on planes and buses with large groups of people and in hotels with other people.”

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence joined a number of players in the #WeWantToPlay movement on social media. He posted a joint statement early Monday representing players in the Power 5 conferences asking for “universal” health and safety protocols, the option for players to opt out with their eligibility guaranteed whether a player chooses to play or not and the eventual formation of college football players association.
The NBA, NHL, MLS and WNBA have had success by creating “bubble” environments for their players, which simply would not work for college football. Their model — if a season were to be played — would be similar to MLB and what the NFL is proposing. Baseball, which is working with around 30-man rosters plus staff has already seen coronavirus outbreaks on the Marlins and Cardinals that have led to the postponement of games. — with AP

Trevor Lawrence is leading the charge to not just play college football this fall but potentially change the sport forever.

The Clemson quarterback and other stars across the country Sunday night tweeted out a graphic that united two player-led movements — #WeWantToPlay and #WeStandUnited — as they try to save the college football season while it hangs in the balance.

The graphic, which Lawrence tweeted out just after midnight, included a list of demands, most notably: “Use our voices to establish open communication and trust between players and officials; ultimately create a college football players association.”

Other items included wanting to play this season and establishing health and safety protocols to protect them from COVID-19, but the idea of a union would be monumental in the college athletics landscape.

“I think everyone felt that was necessary, just to have representation,” Michigan cornerback Hunter Reynolds told Yahoo Sports. “And for me, personally, that representation needs to stretch across all sports and all divisions in college athletics. It’s not just Power 5 football, it needs to be Group of 5, Ivy League, the entire FCS, Division II, Division III; football, basketball, soccer, softball, track and field, etc.”

The players’ push came on a night when commissioners of the Power 5 reportedly met to talk about whether a college football season could be played this fall, with a growing sense that it could be in danger because of COVID-19.

Players in the Pac-12 and Big Ten had previously created the #WeStandUnited movement, which asked for stronger coronavirus protections and other changes to stop exploiting college athletes. The Pac-12 letter went as far as threatening to opt out of training camp if their demands were not met.

Meanwhile, another trend began elsewhere with other players tweeting #WeWantToPlay. Some of the game’s biggest stars worked on Sunday to combine those two movements, according to Yahoo Sports, after feeling that critics were trying to pit them against each other.

A series of direct messages, FaceTimes and a Zoom call — which reportedly included the likes of Lawrence, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields, Alabama running back Najee Harris, Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard and Oregon tackle Penei Sewell, among others — soon gave way to the players’ united push.

“The series of events that transpired in two hours was honestly pretty insane,” Stanford defensive end Dylan Boles told Yahoo Sports. “But it was amazing that it came through. Now we’ve all come to the agreement that we can work together, to really create something that should’ve been done a long time ago. Now we finally have the power to truly do it.”

Playing in the spring makes no sense. No way players could recover & play a full season the following fall.

These stories on Trevor Lawrence and his group are mischaracterized. There are no “demands”, just suggestions on how they would like to see college athletics operate.

Shitty journalism that we’ve come to see all the time now.

First FBS conference cancels football season

The Big Ten blinked first.

The conference became the first in the Power 5 to cancel its 2020 football season on Monday, the Detroit Free Press reported. Facing concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, the league’s presidents voted 12-2 to not play fall sports, according to the report — with only Nebraska and Iowa voting to play, Dan Patrick reported on his radio show. The Power 5 conferences met Sunday to discuss cancelling the 2020 season.

The home of powerhouses like Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan and Wisconsin — which, along with Minnesota and Iowa, were all included in the preseason Top 25 Coaches’ poll — became the second FBS conference to cancel its season after the MAC was the first on Saturday. UConn, an independent, was the first FBS school to cancel its season. The Big Ten had previously shifted to a conference-only schedule.

The Big Ten is expected to make the official announcement Tuesday, according to the Free Press. Patrick reported the Pac-12 is also going to cancel its 2020 season, with the SEC, ACC and Big 12 holding on for now.

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh made what appeared to be a last-ditch effort to reverse course Monday, issuing a statement that claimed “this virus can be controlled and handled.”

“I would like to address the rumors that are swirling today,” Harbaugh said. “I’m not advocating for football this fall because of my passion or our players desire to play but because of the facts accumulated over the last eight weeks since our players returned to campus on June 13.”

Harbaugh cited 11 positive tests out of 893 administered to the football program, including two out of the last 417 and zero out of the last 353. He said Michigan’s health and safety guidelines have been followed and could be an example for others to match.

“This isn’t easy. This is hard,” Harbaugh said. “We have developed a great prototype for how we can make this work and provide the opportunity for players to play. If you are transparent and follow the rules, this is how it can be done.”

Michigan defensive back Hunter Reynolds was one of the organizers behind the #BigTenUnited movement, which called on the conference to adopt stricter health and safety protocols and ensure protections for its athletes in the face of COVID-19.

And those students go where after class and on the weekends, etc. and bring what back to campus??
All true, which is part of the argument against opening campuses back up. But under some circumstances at many campuses that have approached this in as responsible a way as possible, students who stake responsibility for themselves stand a chance against exposure and/or spreading it themselves. That just isn't an option in football; the best defense have been surrendered by playing.

Hard working student athletes in olympic sports are part of this too

Stinks there is no BIG 10 and nobody watches the pack12 anyway.
Give me the SEC, Big 12, and ACC and I will be beyond happy.

Had to do this.
Need a national effort in all we do.
Including sports.
WW II is the model.

I think you're right, but at least they have that option. It isn't an option under any circumstances in football.

Correct but letting kids not play who are worried about covid is an option. Which would allow those athletes who want to play to do so.

Oh yeah because the wed after election day a proven vaccine will be wildly distributed
When this first started I said this would end up with numbers akin to the flu and was right. If it weren't for dumb as nd dumber (Cuomo and Murphy) sending patients into nursing homes the death rate would be lower than the flu. More than half of the deaths came in nursing homes with an average age of 78. We don't need a vaccine. Flu shot only 30-40% effective in a good year.
