Not so Big East this year

Since Monday, some notable games

Purdue 83 Xavier 71
Penn 76 Villanova 72
Michigan 89 SJU 73
Marquette 71 Illinois 64
Creighton 92 Iowa 84
Providence 72 Wisconsin 59
Rutgers 71 Gtown 60
Mich St 74 Butler 54
Villanova 57 Maryland 40
Dayton 88 SJU 81
Kansas State 73 Providence 70
So Carolina 73 DePaul 68
Washington 74 Xavier 71

Last night was bad for the BigEast, but maybe not so doom and gloom.

It's early, but I'm getting a lot more confident in our ability to finish as high as 5th. Not because we're any better than I expected (as we obviously haven't been tested yet) but because the depth of the conference looks less than I expected. As I see it right now:

Tier 1: Marquette, Creighton, UConn
Tier 2: Nova
Tier 3: Everyone else
Tier 4: Georgetown and DePaul

Agreed - but i might lump Nova in with everyone else (unless Jay Wright starts coaching them again).

As far as St John's, i would be very surprised if Pitino does not have them playing well by mid season. Nonetheless, at this point they don't look good. Michigan who rolled them, lost to Long Beach St last night at home.

I agree but I wanted everyone else in "Tier 3" to show the size of the gap from the top 3 to the pack. And having an empty Tier 2 seemed silly, so Nova's thumping of Maryland gave them the honor of being my lone Tier 2 for now.

I would. When else but over the next 2-3 weeks do teams really get the opportunity to beat high majors from other conferences before selection Sunday? Perceptions are built now.
Why worry about results you have no control over. This happens every year.

To be it looks like three very good teams in Creighton, Marquette and UConn, three poor teams in Butler, DePaul and Georgetown with everybody somewhere in between.

I don't think any of the teams beyond those first three losing to a decent mid-major or better is any great surprise. It's not like we don't see it every year.

BE looks more like the 85 era BE this year than any I can remember, stronger at the top. Hope we find reason over the holiday to be confident we are comfortably in the middle of the pack. And old-timers remember how weak the bottom of the league was then. As Huntz Hall might have said, we resembled that remark.

I see it the same way. You have 3 legit top teams that are Final Four contenders in Connecticut, Marquette, and Creighton. They are a clear cut above everyone else.

The rest? We'll see. Nothing stands out so far from preseason prognostications really.

A huge strength with UConn is having two good centers. Clingan was ineffective the other night and the other kid was gangbusters. Having depth at center and PG is huge

Clingan was ineffective the other night and the other kid was gangbusters.
FWIW, Clingan is still working his way back from injury trying to get into game shape. Plus, he was sick. That explains why he looked a little flat and winded. In fact during one break in the game he indicated he needed his inhaler. Give him through the end of the month and he'll be back to his old self.

Agree that Samson has been impressive.

Was at the battle for Atlantis and ,even tho not a Mildcats admirer, have to admit Team looked very good. Those Nova devotees with me may lighten up on the "Fire Neptune" campaign --at least for a month
