Nova down 5 to Penn with 10 mins left

What is JW even doing being at that game. Nova rolling big money for Neptune and staff

Listened to the last couple of minutes on SXM. This isn't news but the Villanova radio team are the biggest home team announcers in the history of broadcasting. They make the Marquette guys sound like they call it down the middle.

It was pretty funny listening to them lose their stuff as calls didn't go in Villanova's favor or when the refs went to the monitor late.

As an aside, we are very fortunate to have two very professional announcers—including one of the all-time greats—doing our radio broadcasts. College broadcasts tend to otherwise be comically homerish.

I agree. I listen to a fair number of games on SXM when I'm in the car. The Villanova guys are legendary in their homerism and there are certainly others in the conversation.

I find one of the main drivers -- one that we don't have and haven't for the most part going back to the Marty Glickman/Jack Rowan pairing when we started commercial radio broadcasts -- is the former player as a color analyst. Those guys, understandably tend to show little impartiality and given their audience don't need to.

Rick Pitino laments ‘terrible’ St. John’s roster problem

By Zach Braziller

St. John’s roster has a problem up front.

“We did a good job of putting this team together … but our frontcourt depth is terrible,” the Johnnies’ coach said after his team’s dismal 89-73 loss to Michigan at the Garden on Monday night. “You need to have five or six frontcourt guys, and we have too much depth in the backcourt and not enough depth in the frontcourt.”

It’s no surprise that in St. John’s four games counting the two exhibitions, it has looked good in the contests that forward Chris Ledlum has performed well and been shaky when he has not.

Against Stony Brook, the Harvard transfer was all over the floor making winning plays.

He didn’t have it against Michigan’s big front line, limited to four points on 1-for-7 shooting with four turnovers.

Ledlum played a team-high 26 minutes.

Kansas transfer Zuby Ejiofor is raw, and returning forward Drissa Traore is more of a depth piece unlikely to see extended minutes.

That leads to an overdependence on Ledlum for the time being.

“Going forward, we need more frontcourt depth,” Pitino said. “Chris played a lot of minutes. We don’t really have somebody to take his place. That’s the weakest position we have.”

St. John’s was outscored in the paint, 36-28, but it did outrebound the Wolverines, 47-39, and had a whopping 33 second-chance points.

RJ Luis has begun doing basketball activities after missing six weeks with a fractured left hand. The expectation is the UMass transfer will return for the Nov. 25 game against Holy Cross.

“I think he can definitely help us,” Pitino said.

St. John’s hosted five-star guard VJ Edgecombe of Long Island Lutheran, the entire Archbishop Stepinac basketball team, four-star signee Jaiden Glover and sophomore point guard Jermel “Magic Mel” Thomas of Cardinal Hayes. … Celebrities Fat Joe, Jadakiss, ESPN boss Jimmy Pitaro and former Mets closer and St. John’s alum John Franco were in attendance. … Phil Martelli served as the acting head coach for Michigan as Juwan Howard works his way back to the sideline after undergoing heart surgery in September. Howard was in the building Monday.

Villanova and St. John's look like two of the many teams that remade their rosters through the portal but have not yet figured out to make the total equal to the sum of the parts. It's going to take some time for teams like this, I think, assuming there is chemistry to be had at all. It's one downside of widespread building through the portal.

Pitino throwing his players under the bus at the 1st sign of trouble!
He put the roster together. And it was lauded enough to get them picked 5th in a tough conference.
He's complaining about the roster he totally assembled. Heck, the 1 player he kept is a top front court player, he only needed to add a few more. He didn't realize that he was portaling too many guards and not enough front court guys. These are his guys and if it goes south he is the one to blame.

Pitino and the Johnnies deserve a humbling year

Stuff Kevin learned from him.

Based on Pitino's track record, he can do whatever he wants. St John's was probably overrated to start the season, but they will probably end the season where those initial expectations were. Last year, Iona probably gave UCONN their best game in the tournament. Pitino will be fine.

I think i would be a lot more concerned about Nova. He is clearly in over his head, and he has the unenviable take to follow Jay Wright.

We have a whole season to go, but I called it from the jump. Even Rick Pitino can't overcome his haphazard roster construction. Wait until the chemistry problems kick in, a loaded backcourt with quality players sitting for long periods is a recipe for disaster.

In Sha I trust!

A lot of successful coaches do that.

There was no one better in these parts at blaming players for a loss than Bob Hurley Sr. …. It’s an ego thing.
