PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard said the week away from the Big East grind allowed his team to get back to basics.

“We had three days of practice like it was the preseason,” he said. “We watched a little film and I could tell we were ready.”

He was right. The Pirates put on an impressive performance Saturday, beating No. 12 Providence, 81-72.

Khadeen Carrington went 12-for-12 at the free throw line and scored 22 points. The sophomore did all that in a reserve role for the Pirates, who shot 48 percent from the floor and held the Friars to 30 percent.

Isaiah Whitehead and former Massachusetts contributor Derrick Gordon each had 15 points while Desi Rodriguez added 10 for the Pirates (13-4, 3-2).

Seton Hall dominated the action down low. The Pirates outscored the Friars in the paint 38-26 and won the rebounding battle by a healthy amount (50-36). Willard noted that by controlling the glass, the Pirates were able to get out on the break and create easier scoring chances for guards Carrington, Whitehead and Gordon.

“[Providence head coach Ed Cooley] usually has one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the country, so I was worried,” Willard said. “But I thought if we could rebound, we could run. At times I thought we got a lot of easy buckets and that took some pressure off of us in the half-court.”

Ben Bentil paced the Friars (15-3, 3-2) with 21 points. The sophomore got the bulk of his points at the free throw line as he went 4-of-15 from the field. Kris Dunn had 16 points but fouled out with 3:02 left.

“When Kris is in foul trouble, our identity changes as a program. He needs to be on the foul and we need to be more disciplined,” Cooley said. “At the same time, he was on the floor during the early part of the game when we struggled.”

Rodney Bullock scored 11 points for Providence while Kyron Cartwright added 10.
Providence opened a 13-8 lead as Bullock scored consecutive baskets with Cartwright assisting on both. It was all Seton Hall the rest of the half as the Pirates enjoyed a 38-28 halftime lead.

Providence missed five straight shots and 10 of 12 to close the opening half.

“We’ve been down double digits in each of our last three games,” Cooley said. “To try and fight back, it hasn’t been a very good thing to watch.”

Seton Hall’s largest lead was 13 points with 17:47 left. The Pirates survived a couple of pushes from the Friars, who got within 72-66 after Bentil hit a 3-pointer with 2:56 left.

The Pirates, who struggled when the Friars switched to a zone defense, regrouped as Gordon hit two free throws to bump the lead up to 11 points with 46 seconds left.
“We were looking to still attack,” Willard said.

I am getting tired of Cooley already. Anyone know if he gave our team any credit for beating them? I also noticed he shook hands with Willard and proceeded to blow right by him. He has two home losses already in a league where it is extremely important to take care of business at home.

Yeah Joe. I saw that. Blew by Willard like he was dirt. Really like Cooley a lot and understand his feelings after losing a game of importance, But that was disappointing by the Providence coach.

BTW, as noted in Thursdays Big East Conference call Cooley has been sick this week and wasn't available. His assistant LaFleur took his place.

Great win yesterday. A terrific team performance. Well done by Willard, maybe it was the turning of a corner for this group.

He has vertigo.

Watching them beat Wichita St and Marquette and playing decently against the best team (Villanova ) in the BE , I believe somehow they will get wins against some of the top tier teams.

There are still 13 more games plus BE Tournament ,so I am not giving up .

Would start giving some of the bench players like Anderson, Gprdon ,Singh some more time.Seem like they are competitors and play hard regardless of the score .

Rodriquez and Delgado ? Delgado was all freshman BE player , but he has very limited offensive skills ,can't shoot beyond 3 feet from the basket . He should realize he is in there for the rebounding and the role as a defensive presence in the middle .And he will have opportunities to get some baskets in close .Rodriquez' outside shooting is still not at a BE level . Their temperaments are not helping the team .

Question or sarcasm .Is Delgado going to have more technical fouls in a season than Bobby Gonzales ?

Hope the team doesn't let this season slip by .

The Providence game is a big step to the NCAAs. Villanova and Xavier up next . Hoping they can beat at least one ,maybe both.?

6 BE teams in NCAA tournament.? . Pretty sure about Villanova, Xavier, Butler. It seems Providence, Seton Hall ,Georgetown ,Creighton will be contending for the remaining spots . Don't see Marquette, DePaul , St Johns at all .

Providence is definitely gonna make it. Although their ranking has always been dubious to me **ducks for cover from CornyT**

I agree with the rest of analysis. Gtown, SHU, Creighton all have a shot. Right now SHU is probably in the catbird seat with respect to those 3.

If we can beat Villanova, we'll be cooking with gas. 4-2 with a stretch of home games on the horizon.

The 2 games against Gtown seem to be the biggest to me.
I want those wins!

What a great league. There's a mix of teams here that are interesting to me that we're tangled with:

Providence has not looked good for a pretty long period of time. They've been down double digits in a lot of games. They need to develop some of these other players to take on more of a responsibility off of Dunn/Bentil. Their national ranking is a bit above where they are as team, IMO. They have a very good profile with a few big wins already on the wall, but I don't think they are the type of 14-4, 13-5 BE team you'd think at #12 in the country.

Creighton looks well coached and really finding the rhythm together, but they have a lot of work to do. Their non-conference is abysmal and thus far we are their best win.

Georgetown is perplexing. They need a run. Despite being 4-2 in the league, those wins have come against DePaul (x2), St. John's, and Marquette.

Marquette is a wild card. They've had a rough schedule to start but should be able to get to 4-4 this week.

I too would love to sweep Georgetown. Despite their bad losses, they do seem to be difficult competition, perhaps somewhat ahead of where our team is at right now.

Still have work to do per Lunardi from last night:

Joe Lunardi ‏@ESPNLunardi Jan 16
FIRST OUT: SHall, StJoes, UTA, Stanford. NEXT OUT: Bama, Clem, Marq, ArizSt. FOUR MORE: Wake, LSU, Vandy, BYU.

At least it wasn't as bad as what happened between Cluess and Rice after the Iona/ Monmouth game and where a Iona player reportedly slapped a Monmouth player during the end of game handshake. The league has announced it will investigate and Cleuss looks like a fool and sore loser with his tweets about the Monmouth bench celebration.

Lunardi's post must've been before Clemson's W over Miami yesterday. They now have 3 wins in a row over ranked teams (Louisville, Duke & Miami). Yes their OOC is nothing impressive, but certainly they gotta be in now?

Delgado has very limited offensive skills?..I think he has some sweet moves and with a nice soft touch.

As the season plows on the hugs diminish.
This NBE conference has come a long long way in 3 seasons. A war every night- like the old days. A Coaches league again.
