Proud of this team for not letting the early deficit perpetuate further doubt or lack of confidence and snowball into a in 0-4 conference start.

Kadary can be elite.
When Richmond plays the way he did today, the Hall will be competitive with any team in the conference. He wasn’t assertive from the start but once he got it going he gave as complete a game as you could ask for over 35 minutes. 19 points (7-12 Fg), 9 rebound, 6 assists, 3 steals, and only 1 turnover. That’s why he was picked 2nd team all conference in the preseason. He is starting to give you the all league effort more consistently. Maybe the early season message from Sha is getting through.

Tyrese held his own plus some
Early on it looked like Soriano was going to feast all day. But Tyrese got to the line 4 times midway through the first half and it seemed to ignite his motor. All of a sudden he started making it difficult for Soriano to get position, was challenging balls at the rim, and grabbing boards in traffic. He also avoided foul trouble allowing him to log 33 big minutes. If Ty gives you 16/9 that’s a strong compliment to Kadary’s effort.

Dawes under control
I only observed 1 out of control wild layup attempt and 1 or 2 rushed 3 point attempts. Otherwise he predominantly had his feet set resulting in tying a career high 22 points on 5 of 10 from 3. If Dawes can let the game come to him and still stay aggressive, I believe you will see more of his career 40% from deep compared to the 26% 3 point shooting he brought into the game during conference play.

The Pirates controlled tempo
In a post earlier this week I said it was easier said than done, but the Hall did exactly that. They applied pressure full and 3/4 court speeding up St. John’s into poor shots. Then they gang rebounded (41-34 advantage) with 5 players grabbing 4 or more. After they secured the ball they did a good job of not letting St. John’s dictate tempo with their press, ran the shot clock down, while running their offense and attacking the paint. 26-42 from 2 point range (62%). I don’t expect them to put up 80+ nightly but they held SJU sub 70 which is where they need to hold opponents.

Shorter Rotation
Holloway basically went with a 7 man rotation today. He gave Tray some limited first half minutes (3) but didn’t see the floor again in the second half until garbage time. He didn’t play the frosh and pushed his starters to all play 25+ with his 3 hot hands getting 33+ minutes as well. Was this Sha adjusting to the game itself or is this a new philosophy we will see going forward?

All in all, plenty of positive signs from this effort. It demonstrated that there is a blueprint for success for this team to win.

It will just require more consistency from your most talented offensive players. Today they got those efforts plus some.

Great points. Team looked cohesive despite the early deficit and the guys we need to play well played well. We started slowing down to climb back in it. Something we did not do at Marquette.

Dawes needs to take shots within the offense. He's a different player when that happens. He can't be doing too much with the ball, not his game.

I think Richmond is over the hump now. He's been outstanding over the 4 BE games despite some struggles at Marquette. And when the team is spacing and sharing the ball it makes him even more effective. He's got the 5th-highest usage rate in league games, highest assist rate, 11th best offensive-rating.

I don't think we can win at Creighton, but stealing the game there would offset the two tough losses and set us up nicely with Butler, Georgetown, and DePaul thereafter. This is the time to make moves if it's going to happen this season.

Posh---- of whom I've been a big fan---- disappeared. Big dilemma for Anderson as Posh's offense is often absent yet his disruption ability was needed as we made a big second half push. I wonder if he was injured.

MBF72 -- nice observation. He was not even close to looking like he did last Year.Actually, I was surprised Anderson kept him in as long as he did. Anderson called in the game with 6 to go by not even trying to press-- Anderson has to be on the hot seat.

What names will be bandied about if this is Anderson's last year? Will they continue to look to a national figure or return to someone with local roots?

Key was defense going to a zone and Dawes being on fire. Changed the game completely around. Nicely done.
Shortening the rotation and hitting some outside shots changes everything.

If we play like we did the final 30 minutes…we’ll be competitive with anyone in the conference.

We’ll know if something has “clicked” If we see the same effort and style the next few games. This should be our identity.

The individual efforts of Dawes and Richmond were huge. Samuel and Dre, too. But what also impressed me today was the improved foul shooting, the three point acuracy, the strong defense and the shortened rotation.

GReat game by multiple players on both offense and defense. If we shot ft's like this game vs Providence and Xavier, we win both these games (3-1 BE record).

Tyrese played his best game ever. Rebounded well which was a big key. Didnt lose faith after soriano killed us early. Were we down 16 early? Reminds us of another comeback of yore.

Richmond is so good. So many disruptions. So many tough rebounds. And the points, and the assists...manoman.

Had to think dawes would break out. Very nice to see. Is harris gonna follow...he swished a 25 footer after the buzzer...Femi and kc had good games and d davis made sure they didnt make a run.

Very surprised we saw no pressure in the last 22 minutes. Seemed like anderson gave up.

Awesome win. Great job Pirates, great job Sha.

Free throw shooting numbers will always look better when the right guys take them.

Richmond, Dawes, Harris, D Davis were 9-10.

Samuel was 6-10 and none attempted by Femi or KC.

I like that KC and Femi didn’t force too much offensively. Combined 6-11 fgs. Femi hit a big 3 early in the game as we closed the gap. But if he had missed that deep 3, people would have complained about his shot selection. Sometimes you have to live with the good and the bad. Both guys also played very well today and are not going to be stuffing the stat sheet with offensive numbers.

There will also be nights where their effort attacking the rim and on the offensive glass leads to more free throws from both. Reality is those percentages won’t be sexy and it just is what it is.

Good points and agree with the shorter rotation. More continuity and guys having confidence in the ball movement and passing game. Trey and Sanders can provide some offense, but defense kept them in the game until they found the offense.

1-I'm not sure if Richmond is buying in or if Sha has put the ball in his hands and said you're going to play 35 mpg now and you need to bring it. Whatever, he is playing at a different level on both ends of the floor.
2-Dawes played his best game today (obvious), but it was all about his tempo and not rushing.
3-Femi and KC are going to give you tough defense and never take a play off. They need to be on the floor even with the cringeworthy drives sometimes.
4-For this team to win, Sha is going to have to ride Kadary, Samuel and Dawes for the offense with Tre pitching in. It's not going to be like this every game, when all four deliver, but the offense needs to run through them with other supporting.
5-Harris' form looked better, but he cannot buy a basket right now.
6-Zone defense - enough said.

Villanova loses to MU at home today and X picks off UConn. You are never as bad as you look when you struggle and never as good when you win. I'm still not sure about this team, but they can compete and maybe Sha is figuring it out.

Looks likes it’s going to be one of those frustrating years, similar to the Gonzo teams where you see we have legitimate talent, just not enough depth and not enough teamwork to really make it come together.

I’m sure Sha is a much better coach, but im not sure how much more he can get out of this team.

At this point in time any win would be important but beating St.John’s makes this win extra special. We needed this outcome today and the players and coaches responded and hopefully we’ll see this contine.

His numbers are down across the board and yet his minutes are up slightly from his first two years. His turnovers are also creeping up.

He was never a great shooter but he shot nearly 50% from the floor last year. He's at 35.3 this season. His already poor three-point shooting has fallen off a cliff -- 4-29 this season is 13.8% which drops his career percentage to 23.7%.

I agree with your points.

Would add Harris needs to start making 3 pointers as can't count on Dawes every game.Unfortunately,he looks rushed and lacking confidence in the shot.

While our defense looked good SJU was awful offensively outside of Soriano and Jones.

One big difference today offensively is we used the shot clock and we weren’t taking rushed shots early unless we had the advantage. In our losses we were tossing the ball up early on multiple possessions. We were patient offensively and worked for shots, made the extra pass and it showed with 17 assists.

Harris' struggles have reached the point of absurdity.

Over his last five games he is 1-22 from three-point range. For the month of December he was 3-32 and if you include the last game in Orlando, he is 3-35 over a nine-game stretch.

Here's hoping the turn of the calendar changes things for him.

I told prof ed i had a premonition that dawes and harris when 8 for 10 from 3 in an easy win. Harris is right on the doorstep. Every shot backrimming the hoop. He swished a 25 footer after the buzzer, off of one foot. Nice drive by Jamir yesterday.

It's insane. He could've been such a difference maker this year with his experience and ability. Unfortunate.

The question is how long do you continue to give him minutes if he keeps playing like this? Just like when a shooter gets hot you play that hot hand the opposite is true when a player goes cold you limit his role until he finds his game again.

That's a good question.
I think you stick with him hoping he breaks out of his slump.
He doesn't hurt us on defense and we desperately need his threes.

The struggles of Dawes and Harris have been well documented. And it has killed the team in more games than they've helped so far. We can talk about defense, post presence, but when you have two shooting guards who are in their 4th and 5th seasons who have been good shooters throughout their career, there was an expectation they would deliver to help and offset many of our limitations.

I'm glad to see Dawes get hot because you see the difference when we have a shooter to spread the floor which is what we thought we'd get more consistently. We need those two to make these open shots if we're going to do anything with this season.

I think the best guys and starters should have been playing more min, assuming no foul trouble. The mass subs arent needed. They were furiating under willard w mass subs after the under 16 timeout. Dre davis 2 very efficient games off the bench. I wish he would start over femi and femi 1st off the bench. Maybe due to dres knee.

Al can be really good if he recognizes when to shoot and when to create. We need his aggressiveness and confidence and ill live w the decision making over jamir as jamir seems like his shooting confidence is gone

As long as Harris is working hard and playing solid defense I think you keep going to him. FWIW, he doesn't look like he's hanging his head and letting his shooting woes affect the rest of his game. If that happens, that's when you look to your other options in earnest.

While you would like Sanders to get more minutes, it's also tough to force feed him. While you can see the talent, I'm not sure he's at the point where he's a better all-around option than Harris is.
