Proud of this team for not letting the early deficit perpetuate further doubt or lack of confidence and snowball into a in 0-4 conference start.
Kadary can be elite.
When Richmond plays the way he did today, the Hall will be competitive with any team in the conference. He wasn’t assertive from the start but once he got it going he gave as complete a game as you could ask for over 35 minutes. 19 points (7-12 Fg), 9 rebound, 6 assists, 3 steals, and only 1 turnover. That’s why he was picked 2nd team all conference in the preseason. He is starting to give you the all league effort more consistently. Maybe the early season message from Sha is getting through.
Tyrese held his own plus some
Early on it looked like Soriano was going to feast all day. But Tyrese got to the line 4 times midway through the first half and it seemed to ignite his motor. All of a sudden he started making it difficult for Soriano to get position, was challenging balls at the rim, and grabbing boards in traffic. He also avoided foul trouble allowing him to log 33 big minutes. If Ty gives you 16/9 that’s a strong compliment to Kadary’s effort.
Dawes under control
I only observed 1 out of control wild layup attempt and 1 or 2 rushed 3 point attempts. Otherwise he predominantly had his feet set resulting in tying a career high 22 points on 5 of 10 from 3. If Dawes can let the game come to him and still stay aggressive, I believe you will see more of his career 40% from deep compared to the 26% 3 point shooting he brought into the game during conference play.
The Pirates controlled tempo
In a post earlier this week I said it was easier said than done, but the Hall did exactly that. They applied pressure full and 3/4 court speeding up St. John’s into poor shots. Then they gang rebounded (41-34 advantage) with 5 players grabbing 4 or more. After they secured the ball they did a good job of not letting St. John’s dictate tempo with their press, ran the shot clock down, while running their offense and attacking the paint. 26-42 from 2 point range (62%). I don’t expect them to put up 80+ nightly but they held SJU sub 70 which is where they need to hold opponents.
Shorter Rotation
Holloway basically went with a 7 man rotation today. He gave Tray some limited first half minutes (3) but didn’t see the floor again in the second half until garbage time. He didn’t play the frosh and pushed his starters to all play 25+ with his 3 hot hands getting 33+ minutes as well. Was this Sha adjusting to the game itself or is this a new philosophy we will see going forward?
All in all, plenty of positive signs from this effort. It demonstrated that there is a blueprint for success for this team to win.
It will just require more consistency from your most talented offensive players. Today they got those efforts plus some.
