While we wait for JP's game article.....
Powell was very efficient scoring 30 points while missing only 3 shots. One a long buzzer beating heave right before the half. Still he caught hell from Willard who called him out for not being more aggressive in the first half on offense.
Best game I have seen from Mamu. The box score doesn't tell the story. That's as aggressive as I have seen him on the court. Especially on D. Not surprising at all that his plus/minus was a ridiculous +32 in slightly over 24 minutes of play.
Now, let's see how he plays against more physical teams.
Spoke to Pat Lyons about opening up the upper tier against Rutgers. It's a consideration as they are nearing a sellout, but he hasn't made up his mind just yet.
Felt bad for Quincy. He got some of the cheapest fouls called on him possible last night which limited his PT. Still, I love how he played, with so much intensity, especially on D.
Clearly he has changed his game to fit the needs of this team and that shows a very high understanding of the role on this squad.
Best D, albeit against a far inferior team, I have seen by the Pirates in a long time. 4 minutes into the contest you could see the final score was going to be ugly.
One player had a severe case of the jitters last night and that was Ro Gill. Showed very bad hands and was fumbling the ball most every time he touched it. Still, that block was one you seldom see. He actually slammed the ball straight down to the ground so hard it bounced about 10-12 feet in the air causing a jump ball by the rest of the players on the court.
Last year's team would have outscored this Wagner team by 20 points in the first half and then cruised to a 25 point victory. This new and younger version of the Pirates outscored Wagner by 24 points in the 2nd half. winning by 40.
Did Nzei play last night? It didn't seem like he was on the court until you checked the box score. 5-6 from the field, 7 rebounds, +18 plus/minus, 11 points, a steal and excellent defense. He showed at least on this one night he deserved the start.
Nelson and Rhoden playing in their first college game showed no signs of nervousness. Both are excellent athletes and although raw you would have to be blind not to see they are going to be big time players for the Hall. Each showed intensity, yet played within themselves which in game one of their college careers was impressive.
Get ready for an up and down type season for TT. He wants to play in the NBA and as noted in another thread from the neck down he has the talent. But for him to take it to the next level BB IQ is going to be crucial. He has the perfect staff to help get him there, but the bottom line is eventually he has to listen to them because they have his best interests at heart. Forget about the NBA and thinking you are always the best player on the court and just concentrate on doing the things that could make that come true. Perhaps you could look at #13 during the games this season.
Reynolds still might be a walk on in the minds of some, but his D is high major D1. Willard said this in the post game.........Myles Powell has gotten so much better because he has to go up against Shavar in practice every day.
Myles Cale is so smooth. And he takes that athleticism and adds great intensity, especially on D to it. He is an accurate jump shot away from being a special player.
Bottom line, it was just one game. At home against a severely out-manned opponent, so the result has to be taken with that into consideration. But it was an excellent beginning for a young team with potential. San injuries this is not a 8-9 team in the conference. I said that from day 1. I firmly believe they have the talent to finish 3-5 in the league with 4th most likely in my mind.
