Oddly the Giants at 6-7 have a better chance to make the playoffs than the 8-5 Jets do using the NFL tie breaker fomulas. The reason of course is that the Giants are playing in arguably the weakest Division in the NFL and are in a 3 way tie for first place. If The Giants and Washinton finish the season in a tie the Skins win. But if the Giants run the table that would, of course, eliminate the Eagles from contention. In that scenario, they would simply be looking for Washington to lose once.
If the Giants can split with the Panthers and Vikings, they would have to hope that 8-8 will be good enough and that their Week 17 game with Philadelphia will decide the division. The Times playoff simulator gives the Giants an 85 percent chance to win the division if they beat the Panthers and Eagles and a 57 percent chance of they lose to Carolina but win their final two games.
The Jets on the other hand would be in the playoffs if the season ended today but of course it doesn't. Right now they are in a 3 way tie for two wildcard spots with KC & Pittsburg. But if all three sweep out the Jets would be eliminated with an 11-5 record. The reason is that Pitt plays 3 games against AFC foes whereas the Jets have a game with Dallas. The AFC record is the first tie breaker & Pitt would jump over the Jets in that scenario if they are tied at either 10 or 11 wins. KC has by far the easiest remaining schedule. But if both Pitt & the Jets lose one game and the Jet loss is to Dallas rather than NE or Buffalo then they get the 2nd spot. That being the case Jets fans such as myself better hope that Pitt loses to Denver this Sunday.
