Our offense VS Shot Blockers

I think we got exposed a little bit yesterday. Did you notice how many times we got blocked on drives to the rim or shots right around the basket? I think teams with capable bigs are going to force us to drive more. We really struggled in this department yesterday. Also is it me or does Ish seem to get blocked alot more than any other player? For some reason he has trouble finishing around the rim even though he is fairly tall and athletic.

It's not easy going up against taller and athletic players. We are team that thrives at getting the ball to the rim and relying on offensive rebounds. That's what's impressive about SJU's bigs; they're not just tall people we can out-maneuver with our athleticism.

The 3PT shot is what really opened it for us early. When they stopped falling and our defensive intensity faded, well, you saw what happened.

Ball movement and dragging those kinds of players out is key, if you can. Or get them into their own foul trouble, but that's a greater risk.

You beat good rim protectors near the rim by either pump faking or attacking their body.
Delgado is our only post player that consistently uses a pump fake and he really doesn't get blocked much.
Desi usually does a good job of attacking the body to get an and-1 opportunity (think this happened at least twice against Govan)

When IW passes down low to Ish or Nzei, they need to quickly judge if it's best to immediately throw down the dunk or give a hard pump fake and eat the contact for an and-1 opportunity.

You sound just like a guy I was sitting by yesterday...Yeah, Ish gets his shot blocked all the time. I was hoping to see him go for the jam more, but he did last night and ate it. We never made SJU think yesterday, we came at them obviously, never a pump fake, not much interior passing. We just went to the hoop and shot. It seemed to me they had about 15 blocks. Didn't realize one of their guys leads the league in blocks. I thought a big problem from the start is that we didn't run offense. Even early we played bad offense but just shot our asses off. And then we seemed to stop shooting from deep altogether. Only other game like this imo was the first Creighton game when Watson was too fast to handle and their big guys pushed us around. Next time we played them, neither hurt us. I hope we learned a lesson yesterday.

Correct. Exposed is the proper word. The answer is to develop a good 10-15 foot high percentage jumper. Khadeen's shot at the end is virtually unguard-able if the defensive plan is to collapse at the rim. It's also a high percentage shot from the floor if you can shake your defender.

The only reason to use the word exposed in this case is that we seem to be a team that will either pick & pop, or pick & drive to the basket. Good scouting suggests you pack the paint and collapse. We've seen that from Creighton, Butler, and now St Johns. We got quite a few points from drive and dishes to the corner, but when we kept pushing and pushing for the layups and put backs we were getting denied. Have to learn to stop at 15 feet and take a high percentage jumper. It might not be Gordon's forte, but IW and KC should be able to knock these down easy. Have to develop that part of our game.

If we do you'll see the paint become "unclogged".

We did the same thing against Villanova at home. We repeatedly drove the ball to the basket and got our shots blocked. If there was one thing I wish this team did more of, it is drive to the basket and kick the ball to the shooters in the corners. It takes a lot to get the spacing and timing right, but in the games against teams with shot blockers we really struggle.

If Whitehead's shot was on yesterday, is this much of a discussion? But I still think Carrington has to be a bigger part of crunch time situations. It still pains me that he barely touched the ball in those last two minutes vs Nova.

We did drive to the basket and kick the ball to the shooters in the corners in the first half. St. Johns made an adjustment & the shooters weren't open in the second half.

I totally agree. They made the in-game adjustments to keep guards between the paint and corners in anticipation of the dish. Their bigs were sitting around the rim slacked. One adjustment from us could be the mid-range jumper to bring their bigs back out and open the post game.

i dont remember when the shot stopped falling for desi, but i do remember when desi stopped playing.

Carrington and Rodriguez have been outstanding in the mid-range game. Maybe could feature them a bit more when we go into such ruts.

Good point; it didn't. He shot 4/4 for the game, LOL. All 4 were early on. Team shot 6/11 in that first half.

The rest of the team was 2/11 and 0-for-5 in the second half.

How long was Desi out in the second half? He end up playing 32 minutes, but I feel like he played all 20 of the first.

The one thing I would like to see with Ish is that he takes a bit too long once he has the ball. He takes that extra second that is enough for a defender to get back He needs to work on a quicker decision to either go to the basket or pass the ball. From the sidelines it looks like he is trying to find the groves of the basketball and get a better grip before he makes a decision.

First let me say that I think Kevin Willard has done a good job with this crew this year. But if I have one downfall of KW this year is that he does seem to play "Catholic Ball" where once he gets up 10 points, no matter if we have no one in foul trouble, he pulls the starters and lets the other team play with our second team. I think that was ok in the beginning of the season when we needed to see what players contributions could be. But now, we are entering crunch time and it is time to let the horses run. The one stipulation is that the player HAVE to know that they are in the game until they get in foul trouble, make a dumb play, or just need a break to get wind back in their lungs. This game should have been over in the 1st half. Playing the next couple of games we probably are not going to get that opportunity, but if we did I would love to see it end early rather than with 2.6 seconds to go .

Willard has often noted in post game press conferences that his players get gassed playing M/M for near entire games. So he feels that he has to give them a blow now and then to keep them freshed down the stretch.

I think blueice is spot on, takes a little longer than expected to go up after receiving a pass in the paint for Ish. He may have small hands for his size or just isn't used to being a steady scoring option yet. He will get better with time.

I think Delgado does this too often too and brings the ball down or even puts it on the floor. But otherwise Delgado's floor game in getting into position is outstanding.

A lot of coaches try to weave in back-ups with huge leads like that to preserve their core guys. You just hope the backups can play even or slightly less for a longer period.

If the back-ups can't help then...

Agreed and he does need to rest him or go to zone which is less effective for us. I'd rather him go to backups since M/M tends to bother opponents more and keep them out of rhythm.

Ding. Ding. Ding. Hence our problem in the frontcourt. Have to keep the cupboard stocked with talent that can rise. I hope Jevon (unless there is news about him coming), and Carter can step up and give some minutes next year. Center is still the bigger issue going forward.
