South Orange, N.J. – A total of 51 Seton Hall University student-athletes were inducted into the 2021 class of Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, the athletics department announced Wednesday.

The 2021 group of honorees joins over 320 Seton Hall student-athletes who have been inducted into the prestigious group since 2011. Founded in 1996 by Nick Mourouzis, a long-time football head coach at DePauw University, the non-profit organization was established to recognize varsity letter winning college athletes at four-year accredited college and universities.

In order to earn this distinction, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.4 with at least junior academic standing and be of exceptional moral character.

As stated by the organization, its purposes are to:

  • Encourage and reward high academic scholarship of college athletes at four year accredited colleges
  • To recognize outstanding academic achievements by intercollegiate varsity sport student-athletes
  • To encourage good citizenship, moral character, and friendship among the high academic achievers in college athletics
  • To recognize and honor the individual athlete, his/her team, sport, athletic department and university
  • To mentor and provide leadership to other athletes.

A perennial leader in academic success among its peers, Seton Hall's continued excellence in the classroom is evidenced by the department's commitment to resources as well as the student-athletes' commitment to furthering their education. The Hall's Charles W. Doehler Academic Center for Excellence with its main study area, group meeting spaces and private tutoring rooms, along with the outstanding mentoring and tutoring services provided by the Academic Support Services staff help provide student-athletes with an incredible learning experience.

Congratulations to these scholar athletes.

What does " must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.4 with at least junior academic standing" mean? Kids who are juniors and seniors qualify? What happened to Ike?

As an aside, I'd be interested to know the majors of these kids and our other athletes.

I would think it means a GPA of 3.4 once you are a junior or senior gets you inducted. If I remember right Ike and others, Reynolds comes to mind and there may have been others, were already inducted last year. You only get inducted once.

Agree about the majors, that should be an automatic part of their write ups. Not including that omits the “student” part of being a student-athlete.
