HARRISON, N.J. - The Pirate Blue Summer Caravan made its final stop on Sunday (Aug. 9), bringing Seton Hall supporters to Red Bull Arena for an MLS New York Derby between the New York Red Bulls and New York City FC. With SHU Hall of Fame member Sacha Klejstan in the starting XI the Red Bulls downed NYC FC and Kljestan's Hall teammate, Jason Hernandez, by a score of 2-0 in front of a sold-out crowd of over 25,000.
Following the match, Hernandez and Kljestan visited Pirate Blue supporters at a Meet and Greet which included poster signing and photographs. Also in attendance was Seton Hall men's soccer head coach Gerson Echeverry, who served as an assistant coach during Hernandez and Kljestan's time in South Orange.
Kljestan capped a tremendous three-year career at Seton Hall with a record-breaking 2005 season, earning All-America honors after scoring nine goals and dishing out a program-record 15 assists. The midfielder ranks fifth in SHU history with 28 career assists and holds the school record with six penalty kick conversions.
The 2005 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year was selected fifth overall in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft and played four seasons for Chivas USA before a move overseas to Anderlecht in the Belgian Pro League. The U.S. International returned to the MLS with the Red Bulls this season and has scored four goals with a team-high six assists to help New York currently slot in at second in the Eastern Conference table.
Hernandez played for the Pirates from 2001-04 and helped the Pirates qualify for the NCAA Tournament during each of his four seasons, with SHU advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2001. Following his senior season he earned Second-Team All-BIG EAST honors and was named the 2005 Seton Hall Male Athlete of the Year.
A 2005 MLS Supplement Draft selection of the MetroStars, Hernandez played in three contests for the club before a move to Chivas USA where he played in 50 games over two season. After he was acquired by the San Jose Earthquakes for the 2008 season he played in 163 contests for San Jose before New York City FC selected him in the 2014 MLS Expansion Draft. The defender has played in 14 matches this season during NYC FC's inaugural campaign.
