Pirates Can't Pass Tough Road Test At No. 24 UConn, 70-65 - Seton Hall University Athletics
Harris leads the Pirates with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting
Storrs, Conn. — Graduate student Jamir Harris (North Brunswick, N.J.) finished with a team-high 15 points on 3-of-5 shooting from three-point range and the Pirates held No. 24 Connecticut to 22 percent shooting from long distance but it wasn't enough as the Seton Hall men's basketball team fell to the Huskies, 70-65, at Gampel Pavilion on Wednesday evening.
Graduate student Myles Cale (Middletown, Del.) shot 4-of-7 from the floor and 3-of-4 from three to finish with 11 points, four rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Kadary Richmond (Brooklyn, N.Y.) dropped 12 points and dished out four assists for the Pirates (15-9, 6-8 BIG EAST).
How It Happened
Connecticut jumped out to an early 9-3 lead with 13:32 to go in opening half that forced Seton Hall to call an early timeout. The Pirates responded and went ahead 25-22 with 3:53 left in the first on a three-pointer by senior Jared Rhoden (Baldwin, N.Y.), their first lead since the 19:01 mark.
The lead was attained as part of a 12-2 run where Seton Hall made five consecutive shots. However, the Huskies finished the first half on a 7-2 spurt that gave them a one point lead, 28-27, heading into the locker room.
The two sides traded baskets to begin the second half before UConn's lead ballooned to eight, 39-31, with 16:38 left to play. A pull-up three in transition by Harris cut The Hall's deficit to three, 43-40, but the Huskies responded with five quick points that pushed its advantage to seven, 47-40, with 12 minutes left.
Huskies had a chance to make it an 11-point lead with under eight minutes to go but they made only one of two free throws that kept it a 10-point game, 56-46. Despite cutting its deficit to six points multiple times and five with a under a minute left in the game, the Pirates did not have answer defensively as the Huskies shot 57 percent from the floor in the second half, pushing them to a 70-65 victory.
