Madeline Matheny collects a double-double in the setback.
VILLANOVA, PA. – Graduate student Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) and senior Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) combined for 23 kills and only five errors, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell at Villanova, 3-1 (15-25, 29-31, 25-22, 15-25) on Friday.
The game hinged on the result of a back-and-forth second set. The Pirates appeared to have won the second set, but video replay overturned The Hall's set-winning point, and Villanova went on for a 31-29 set-two victory.
Matheny collected a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Lucas had 11 kills, only one attack error and an impressive .417 attack percentage. Freshman Senna Roberts-Navarro (Honolulu, Hi.) also collected 11 kills.
Defensively, Anna Holland (Waukesha, Wis.) had a team-best 13 digs. Senior Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) also just missed a double-double with 18 assists and eight digs.
SET 1:
Villanova raced out to a 15-7 advantage in set one. The Hall scored five straight to cut its deficit to 15-12, but the Wildcats responded with four straight to boost their advantage back to 19-12. Leading 19-14, Villanova had a 5-0 spurt to enter set point, 24-14. After a service error, Villanova closed out a dominant opening set, 25-15.
SET 2:
A kill by Matheny gave The Hall a 17-14 lead, but Villanova responded with six of the next seven points to give them their first lead of the set, 20-18. The Pirates scored back-to-back points to tie the set at 20. From there, the score was tied nine more times. After Roberts-Navarro kill put The Hall in set point, 28-27, it appeared as though another kill from Senna gave it a set victory, but video review overturned the referee's call, stating her spike sailed wide, tying the set at 28. A block by Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) again put The Hall in set point, but Villanova closed out the set with three straight points to win the epic second set, 31-29.
SET 3:
Villanova won the first point of the third set, but the Pirates responded with a 7-1 run and never trailed again. A kill by Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkey) put Seton Hall in front, 21-18, but Villanova bounced back with four of the next five points to tie the set at 22. The Pirates, however, closed out the set victory with three straight points. A kill by Matheny gave The Hall a 25-22 victory for its first set win. The Pirates had a team-best .400 attack percentage in the third-set victory.
SET 4:
Trailing 11-9, The Hall scored three straight, and an ace by Matheny gave it a 12-11 lead. Villanova, however, responded with a 10-0 run to give it a commanding 21-12 advantage. The Wildcats went on for a 25-15 set four victory.
