PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.), Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Mark McNelly (Limerick, Pa.) all collected a pair of hits, but the Seton Hall baseball team fell at Rutgers, 5-1, on Tuesday.
The Pirates scored first in the top of the second on a Rutgers error, but couldn't find the timely hit later in the game as they collected nine hits, but left 11 on base.
McNelly was the lone Pirate to reach base three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Clyde was 2-for-4, while D'Amico was 2-for-5.
THE GAME:
With two on and one out in the top of the second, the Pirates got on the scoreboard first. Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) reached on a fielding error by the Rutgers' first baseman, and Staus Pokrovsky (Pittsgrove, N.J.) scored all the way from second to give The Hall a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third with two outs, Rutgers' Chris Brito hit a two-run home run, giving the Scarlet Knights a 2-1 advantage. Rutgers tacked on an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 3-1.
Rutgers broke the game open with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to give Scarlet Knights a 5-1 advantage.
THE NUMBERS:
- Seton Hall out-hit Rutgers, 9-to-7.
- The Pirates were errorless, while the Scarlet Knights committed one.
- The Hall left 11 men on base, while Rutgers left eight.
- McNelly reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk.
- Clyde was 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
- D'Amico was 2-for-5 with a pair of singles.
- Seton Hall starter Anthony Ehly (Glenside, Pa.) tossed two hitless innings, but walked four in a no decision.
- Brennan O'Neill (Morristown, N.J.) took the loss with three runs in 3.1 innings pitched in relief.
- Seton Hall drops to 15-15 overall, while Rutgers improves to 17-15.
- The Hall drops to 47-48 all-time against the Scarlet Knights.
- It's the 10th straight game that The Hall has committed one or fewer errors and the 24th time this season.
- Seton Hall has now collected at least nine hits in six of its last seven games and in 10 out of its last 12.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow, Wednesday, April 12 when it hosts local non-conference rival NJIT at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium. First pitch of the contest is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
