Newark, N.J. - Behind five double-digit scorers, the Seton Hall men's basketball team climbed out of a 13-point deficit in the first half to fend off DePaul as the Pirates defeated the Blue Demons, 69-64, in front of 9,770 at Prudential Center on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Tyrese Samuel (Montreal, Quebec) and junior Kadary Richmond (Brooklyn, N.Y.) both had 14 for the Pirates with Richmond dishing out a team-high four assists and pulling down six rebounds. Senior Al-Amir Dawes (Newark, N.J.) tallied 12 points graduate student KC Ndefo (Elmont, N.Y.) added 13 and senior Tray Jackson (Detroit, Mich.) came off the bench to score 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the floor.

Seton Hall improved to 15-9 overall, 8-5 in the BIG EAST and have now won seven of its last eight games. The 1987-88 Pirates, the first NCAA Tournament team in program history, were honored in a pregame ceremony.

How It Happened

Seton Hall got out to sluggish start and didn't connect on its first field goal until the 10:39 mark in the first half on a Jackson layup. Jackson's layup, however, kicked off a 16-2 run and it was capped off by a Richmond three, giving the Pirates its first lead of the game at 18-17 with 5:25 to go before halftime. DePaul took the lead back on the next possession but two possessions, a Dawes steal led to a Ndefo layup and it led to an 8-2 spurt that closed the first half, giving the Pirates a four-point lead, 26-22.

With The Hall holding on to a one-point lead early in the second stanza, the ball went to Samuel as junior Femi Odukale (Brooklyn, N.J.) found him down low and the senior finished the layup to push the lead back to three, 29-26. Later, a stick back by Samuel and five-straight points scored by Dawes gave the Pirates its first double-digit lead of the game with under 16 minutes to play, 36-26. A Dawes three with 11:46 left ballooned the Seton Hall advantage to 17, 48-31, its largest of the game, but DePaul would fight their way back into it in the game's later stages. Following a Ndefo layup that made it 62-50 Pirates, a 7-0 run by the Blue Demons trimmed their deficit to five with 1:28 to go. However, the Pirates cashed in enough at the charity stripe down the stretch to hold on to the five-point victory.
