PROMOTIONS ALL WEEKEND!
Be sure to get to the ballpark all weekend long to cheer on the Pirates and take part in promotional events each day! On Friday, enjoy free soft pretzels and play softball bingo while following along with the game. On Saturday, get there early for our Senior Day ceremony and pick up your Seton Hall softball trading card on the way in. On Sunday, enjoy the warm weather with free ice cream sundaes while supplies last.

LAST TIME OUT
The Pirates went 1-2 last weekend at home against Villanova. After dropping the first two games of the series on Friday, The Hall came out swinging in the series finale on Sunday morning. The Pirates put up nine runs at the dish and Sydney Babik (Gilbert, Ariz.) shut down the Wildcats offense through five innings of three-hit ball to get the win.

A CHANCE AT HISTORY
The Pirates control their own destiny towards clinching a share of the BIG EAST regular season crown. Should the Pirates win all three games this weekend over Butler, they would win their first conference regular season title in program history. The Pirates enter the weekend one game ahead of Villanova in the standings and would need to maintain that lead to earn a first round bye in next week's BIG EAST Tournament.

SENIOR SEND-OFF
The Pirates will celebrate Senior Day prior to first pitch on Saturday afternoon. Miranda Arruda, Ashly Colonnetta, Grace Dawson, Shelby Smith, Taylor Soanes, Ally Taylor, Jordan Tressler and Abby Wingo will each be recognized before the game.

SCOUTING BUTLER (17-30, 11-7 BIG EAST)
  • Butler enters this weekend having taken two out of three at home last weekend against Georgetown. The Bulldogs won the final two games of the series to snap a stretch which saw them lose eight straight and 11 of their last 12 games.
  • Overall, Butler's staff owns the third-highest ERA at 5.47. However, the Bulldog pitchers have fared better during BIG EAST action as their 3.46 team ERA during conference play is third-best.
  • Butler is one of four offenses batting over .300 as a team during BIG EAST play, as it enters with a .301 average and a league-leading 22 home runs.
  • Of those 22 homers during conference play, seven of them belong to Monique Hoosen. That total ranks second in the league, and her 13 home runs on the season as a whole are tied for first.
  • Mackenzie Griman has been the steadiest of the Butler pitchers this season, sporting a 3.91 ERA through 127 innings pitched. The other three Bulldog pitchers all have ERA's of 5.97 or higher on the season. In BIG EAST play, however, both Griman and Rylyn Dyer post ERA's under 3.00.
  • Butler leads the all-time series, 15-10. The Bulldogs took two of three from the Pirates in Indianapolis last March.
NEWS & NOTES
  • Abby Wingo set a new program record for longest hitting streak last Friday against Villanova, doubling in the fifth inning to extend her streak to 17 consecutive games with a hit. Her streak was stretched to 19 after collecting hits in each of the final two games of the series.
  • Wingo has hit safely in 34 of her last 35 games. She has only gone hitless in six of the 50 games she has played this season and has only failed to record a hit in back-to-back games once.
  • Wingo enters the weekend two hits shy of breaking the single-season record of 65 held by Katie Pierce and Valerie Suto.
  • The Pirates are closing in on breaking several single-season team records in 2023. The group has already set new marks in runs scored and RBI and are on pace to break the team's single-season hits mark of 449. Seton Hall also owns a .309 team batting average, which would surpass the previous mark of .307 from the 1999 season.
  • Sunday was Seton Hall's 16th BIG EAST win of the season, the most ever in a single season for the program. The Pirates' 36 overall wins this season are their most since winning 46 games in 2004.
  • Wingo is looking to become the third Pirate ever to bat over .400 for a season. Her .414 average currently sits as the second-highest single-season batting average in team history.
  • Friday's game marks the 2000th game in Seton Hall softball program history.
  • Shelby Smith's no-hitter on April 22 at Providence was the 21st in program history and the first since Ashley Forsyth's perfect game at Saint Peter's on April 8, 2010. As a result of the no-hitter, Smith was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
  • The Pirates enter the weekend with the top team batting average (.309) and ERA (2.68) in the BIG EAST. Abby Wingo's .414 average ranks first and Kelsey Carr's 1.94 ERA is second in the league.
  • Kelsey Carr was electric during the month of April. She is batting .511 (23-for-45) with seven home runs, 30 RBI, 15 runs scored and a 1.067 SLG% offensively to pair with a 2.83 ERA in 29.2 innings pitched. In just BIG EAST games during the month of April, Carr batted .500 (14-for-28) with four home runs, 22 RBI and a 2.66 ERA in 23.2 innings.
  • Carr has had a resurgent year in the circle, owning a 1.94 ERA through 97.2 innings of work this season. No Seton Hall pitcher has posted an ERA under 2.00 since 2005. She has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week twice this season and has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll four times.
  • The Pirates captured their 30th win of the season on April 18 at Marist, reaching that mark for the first time since 2005. That season was also the last time the program won a BIG EAST title.
  • The Pirates will finish with an overall record above .500 for the first time since 2006, when they finished 29-27.
  • Seton Hall has displayed an ability to win games in multiple different ways in 2023. The Pirates have won 11 games this year via mercy rule, and have won 13 of their last 16 games decided by two runs or less.
  • Carr tied the single-game program record for runs batted in on April 16 at DePaul, finishing with seven RBI. She tied Danielle DeStaso's mark which was set against St. Bonaventure on Feb. 8, 2013.
  • Smith picked up her 300th career strikeout on April 1 during her 10-strikeout performance. Smith became the seventh Pirate to achieve the milestone and the first since Reganne Camp in 2020.
  • Smith was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on March 27 for her two-way prowess at Creighton. She went 6-for-11 (.545) with two RBI at the plate while also firing a complete game victory in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. This is Smith's second BIG EAST honor of the season, as she was named Co-Pitcher of the Week on March 6.
  • Erin Howard was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on April 3 after a strong run producing weekend against St. John's. In four games, she batted a team-best .556 (5-for-9) with six RBI. In the 10 games she has started this season, she has RBI's in five of them.
  • Seton Hall's nine-run inning on March 15 against Manhattan was its most in one frame since a 10-run rally in the fifth inning against Army on March 6, 2020.
  • The Pirates' 3-2 win over Texas Tech on March 4 was the program's second ever win against a Big 12 opponent, and first since defeating Kansas, 3-2, on Feb. 17, 2008.
  • Wingo tallied her 100th career base hit on March 4 against Texas Tech.

All three games this weekend can be seen live on FloSoftball. Live stats for all games this week can be accessed here.

Next weekend is more important. At least they have beaten UConn once on the road and have a confidence building victory over Villanova at home. It would be nice to take these three at home though this weekend.

W: Carr, Kelsey (10-4) L: GRIMAN, Mackenzie (8-15)

South Orange, N.J. – Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) allowed just one run over seven strong innings and Ashly Colonnetta (Cypress, Texas) delivered the walk-off single as the Pirates captured a crucial victory, 2-1, on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Pirates can finish no lower than third in the BIG EAST standings and they stay in contention for a share of the conference's regular season crown.

How it Happened
Carr worked herself out of jams often in this one, including in the first inning after a leadoff triple put Cate Lehner 60 feet away. Carr would strike out the next two hitters and induce a flyout to center field to escape the threat.

Butler would, however, grab the lead in the second on a solo home run by Teagan O'Reilly. This would prove to be the Bulldogs' lone tally of the afternoon.

In the third, the Pirates would answer back to tie things up. After a single by Colonnetta and a double by Lela Allen (Phoenix, Ariz.), the Pirates found themselves with two runners in scoring position and only one out. A fielder's choice would cut down a run at the plate and put runners on the corners with two down. Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) would steal second and draw a throw from the catcher, allowing pinch runner Taylor Soanes (Missouri City, Texas) to dash towards the plate to tie the game.

In the fourth, Butler once again threatened with runners in scoring position early in the frame. O'Reilly doubled to open the inning and moved down to third on a sacrifice bunt. Carr would work her magic again to evade any damage and keep things tied up at 1-1.

In the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs placed two runners aboard looking to take the late lead. With two runners in scoring position, Carr got a popout to shortstop by Paige Dorsett to close the half inning.

In the bottom half, Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) worked a walk and Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.) was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with no outs. After Jenna Blevins (Flat Rock, Mich.) grounded out and Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.) walked to load the bases, Colonnetta stepped in with a chance to walk it off. On a 2-2 pitch, the senior rocketed one off the glove of Griman in the circle, beating out the throw and scoring Wingo from third.

Notes & Numbers
  • The win guarantees the Pirates will finish no lower than third in the conference standings.
  • Wingo's program record 19-game hitting streak came to an end after an 0-for-2 day. She still sits two base hits shy of breaking the single season mark.
  • Carr was excellent in pressure situations, forcing Butler's offense to go 0-for-12 with runners on base and 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
  • Friday was the Pirates' third win of the season when tallying four hits or less, all of which have come in BIG EAST play.
  • This is Seton Hall's third walk-off victory of the season.
  • With two games to play in the regular season, the Pirates still control their own destiny towards capturing a share of the BIG EAST regular season title.
What's Next
The Pirates celebrate Senior Day on Saturday as they face off with Butler for game two of the series. Eight seniors will be honored during a pregame ceremony at 12:45 p.m., with first pitch to follow at 1 p.m.

1 down 2 to go !!! I'll be there tomorrow. Let's Go Pirates fans make it to the game. Will be great weather!!!
Silk is too modest to ever pat himself on the back so I will.

Most all of us here support the basketball team. But few of us support all of the school's athletic programs like he does, both financially and attendance wise.

You won't find many better fans than my good friend.

If anyone is going to the 1pm game today, just a reminder that it’s Senior Day so it might be nice to get there a little early for the ceremony.

Go Pirates!

W: Smith, Shelby (13-6) L: CAMMON, Sydney (4-8)

South Orange, N.J. – Behind a strong outing from Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) and a first inning grand slam off the bat of Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.), the Pirates inched closer to their first BIG EAST regular season title in team history with a 6-2 win over Butler on Saturday.

Before the game, eight Pirate seniors were honored on Senior Day. Smith and Wingo were recognized along with Miranda Arruda, Ashly Colonnetta, Grace Dawson, Taylor Soanes, Ally Taylor and Jordan Tressler.

How it Happened
After a quick first inning defensively, the Pirates broke the game open early with five runs in the first inning. Three straight singles brought home the first run, as Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) laced a single up the middle to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Next, Wingo stepped in and launched the first pitch she saw over the wall in centerfield for a grand slam to make it a 5-0 Pirates lead.

Butler attempted to work its way back, putting multiple runners on base in both the second and third innings. After not scoring in the second, a bases loaded walk in the third brought home the first Bulldogs run to make it 5-1. The visitors seemed to be threatening for more with runners on each base and one out, but a line drive to Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.) at shortstop turned into an inning ending double play.

In the fourth, the Pirates used some two out production to manufacture an insurance run. After the first two batters were set down, three straight singles from Lela Allen (Phoenix, Ariz.), Colonnetta and Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) brought home the sixth Pirate run of the day.

Smith cruised through the rest of her outing with little stress. The Bulldogs would add another run in the seventh on a leadoff home run by Ellie Boyer, but the senior was able to record the final three outs to seal the victory.

Notes & Numbers
  • With the win, the Pirates will play for a share of their first BIG EAST regular season title in program history on Sunday.
  • Wingo's first inning grand slam was her 64th base hit of the season, tying Katie Pierce and Valerie Suto for the single-season program record.
  • Wingo's grand slam was the third of the season by the Pirates, with Carr and Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.) owning the others.
  • Smith allowed six hits and two earned runs in the circle while striking out six, picking up her 13th victory of the season.
What's Next
The Pirates conclude the regular season on Sunday, as they go for the sweep over Butler. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.

Ladies drop a heartbreaker to Butler, 7-2. Otherwise a great season. Onto the BET.
Villanova beat Providence. So, it looks like SHU finishes tied with Nova for 2nd. That's a big step up for SHU. Next weekend is more important. It would be great to beat Nova in that first BE Tournament game.

Went from a 1 seed to a 3 seed. Starts Weds. afternoon
They were still going to play Villanova in first game. I guess they will be road team. That may be an advantage if they can score early. Not the end of the world. Let's see if they are up to the task.

I think you're wrong .I think the 1 and 2 seed UConn and Nova get a bye.

W: GRIMAN, Mackenzie (9-15) L: Babik, Sydney (11-4)

South Orange, N.J. – The Seton Hall softball team dropped its regular season finale to Butler, 7-2, on Sunday afternoon. The result solidifies the Pirates as the No. 3 seed at this week's BIG EAST Softball Championship.

How it Happened
Butler's offense got off to a quick start in the first, launching a pair of home runs to claim an early 3-0 advantage. After two more runs crossed on bases loaded walks in the third, the Bulldogs found themselves up 5-0.

The Pirates would get a bases loaded walk of their own in the third, as Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) battled back from an 0-2 count to force home a run to make it 5-1. However, the Pirates would not be able to produce any more damage in the frame.

Butler added a pair in the sixth to open up its lead to 7-1, but in the bottom half of the inning the Pirates mounted more pressure on the bases. With two down in the inning, Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) legged out an infield single to score Lauren Caye (Pittsburgh, Pa.) from third. However, the inning would end as Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.) was thrown out trying to score on the play.

Notes & Numbers
  • The Pirates will be the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST Softball Championship and will take on DePaul at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in Storrs, Conn.
  • This will be the Pirates' first appearance in the BIG EAST Softball Championship since 2015.
  • Perez and Ashly Colonnetta (Cypress, Texas) each collected two hits on the afternoon.
  • Smith came on in relief and did not allow an earned run over 4.2 innings of work.

The Pirates begin their quest for a BIG EAST title on Wednesday as they take on No. 6 seed DePaul in the first round of the BIG EAST Championships. The game can be seen live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
