SCOUTING SACRED HEART
Seton Hall and Sacred Heart will meet for the seventh time in history on Friday. The Pirates have never lost to the Pioneers, and in fact, have lost only two sets in six prior meetings. Most recently, the teams met at the Sacred Heart Invitational in 2022, a Seton Hall sweep.
The Pioneers are coming off a 12-15 record in 2023, but finished with an impressive 11-3 mark in Northeast Conference play. The top-seeded Pioneers, however, were upset by LIU in the NEC Tournament semifinals, which ended their season. Gaby Zovko was named NEC Setter and Rookie of the Year. Dominique Felix earned NEC First Team honors.
This season, Sacred Heart was picked to finish third in the 12-team NEC according to the 2024 Preseason Coaches Poll. Zovko comes back as a sophomore, while All-NEC Second Teamer Camryn Luginbuhl will be back as a senior captain. The incoming class features 11 newcomers, which includes three transfers.
Sacred Heart had a strong opening weekend, winning two of three matches at the UConn Invitational. The Pioneers swept Youngstown State in the season opener before outlasting LIU in five sets. They're coming off a three-set loss to host UConn on Sunday. Luginbuhl leads the team with 3.82 kills per set.
SCOUTING NJIT
Seton Hall will face local rival NJIT for a fourth consecutive season. The Pirates are 8-1 all-time against the Highlanders and have won seven straight in the series. Last season, The Hall swept NJIT in Walsh Gym. The Pirates' only loss in the series came in 2008.
The Highlanders are coming off a 9-17 record in 2023 which included a 1-9 mark in the America East Conference. NJIT closed the regular season with four straight losses.
NJIT is picked to finish last in the six-team America East in 2024, according to its preseason coaches' poll. Eleven student-athletes return from last year's team which picked up nine wins on the season. The seniors feature team captains Ines Varela and Campbell Walker, as well as Cami Augustine.
NJIT went 1-3 at the Salt City Classic in Syracuse, N.Y. in its opening weekend. The Highlanders lost the season-opener to host Syracuse in straight sets before falling to Cansius in four sets on Friday. On Saturday, NJIT fell in five sets to Lafayette before sweeping Le Moyne for its first win of the season.
SCOUTING KENT STATE
Seton Hall will face Kent State for only the third time ever on Sunday. The teams split the prior to meetings with the Golden Flashes sweeping the Pirates in 1997, and The Hall sweeping Kent State in 2021.
Kent State is coming off a rough 2023 season with a final record of 6-23, which included a 2-16 mark in Mid-American Conference play. Their season came to an end with five straight losses. Logan Henderson was named to the MAC All-Freshman Team.
Kent State was picked to finish last this season, according to the 12-team MAC preseason coaches' poll. Only five student-athletes on this season's 17-member roster were part of the program last season. The Golden Flashes return the top four pin hitters, led by outside hitter Mackenzie McGuire.
Kent State dropped all three of its matches last weekend at the Michigan Nike Classic to open the season. The Golden Flashes were swept by Delaware in the season-opener on Saturday, and then lost in four sets and three sets respectively in a pair of contests against Michigan. McGuire currently leads the team with 1.89 kills per set.
