PREVIEW:
Seton Hall will return to the friendly confines of Owen T. Carroll Field this weekend for a three-game series against BIG EAST rival Villanova. Friday's game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start. The first two games of the series will be shown on the Pirate Sports Network, while Sunday's broadcast will be provided by the BIG EAST Digital Network on the Fox Sports Go app.
The Pirates are coming off a three-game sweep of Butler in Indianapolis. The Bulldogs entered the weekend with a 4-1 conference record, but the Pirates defeated them, 6-1 on Friday, 3-0 on Saturday, and 7-5 on Sunday. Casey Dana's three-run home run in the eighth inning on Sunday proved the difference. The Hall got strong starting pitching all series long. Shane McCarthyallowed just one run over a season-high seven innings on Friday. Ricky DeVito tossed a career-high eight shutout innings on Saturday, and Billy Layne, Jr. limited the Bulldogs to only two earned runs over four innings on Sunday.
For their efforts, DeVito was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday, and Rob Dadonawas named to the Weekly Honor Roll.
SERIES INFORMATION:
Seton Hall and Villanova will continue its long rival rivalry this weekend at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Pirates own an 84-43 all-time series lead against the Wildcats. The Hall swept the season series last year in Pennsylvania, and allowed only one run over the three-game weekend. The Pirates have won 13 of the last 15 games in the series. Last year, the series was capped by Zach Prendergast's no-hitter, a 1-0 Seton Hall victory. Cullen Dana also tossed a seven-inning complete-game shutout. Ryan Ramiz batted .615 in the series (8-for-12)
Villanova enters this weekend with a 6-26 overall record and a 0-6 mark in BIG EAST Conference play. The Wildcats have lost seven in a row and are coming off a series loss at home against Wagner. Villanova opened BIG EAST play with series losses to Butler and St. John's. Villanova is 5-5 on the road this season.
