LAST GAME
Graduate student Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) had a team-high 15 points to go with seven rebounds, but the Pirates shot just 23.4 percent from the field and fell to Providence, 51-46, on Saturday.

The Hall's defense proved up to the challenge as it forced 23 turnovers and held the Friars to just 51 points, but the Pirates were just 3-for-27 from three-point range for the game and shot only 23.4 percent overall, their lowest since shooting just 18.6 percent in a win over Savannah State on Nov. 29, 2013.

The Pirates took a 40-39 lead into the fourth quarter, but were just 2-for-16 from the field in the final 10 minutes, while Providence was 8-for-10.

Baines had a team-best 15 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Micah Gray (Oklahoma City, Okla.) tallied 12 points with four rebounds and three steals.

Seton Hall All-Time vs. the Wildcats: Villanova leads, 49-25
2022-23 Meetings:
#11 Villanova 83, Seton Hall 56 (F) – Feb. 27, 2023 (Walsh Gym)
#15 Villanova 99, Seton Hall 65 (F) – Feb. 11, 2023 (Finneran Pavilion)

AGAINST VILLANOVA
Seton Hall and Villanova will renew their long BIG EAST rivalry when they face off on Saturday. The Wildcats own a 45-29 all-time series lead and have won the last three games in the series. The Hall's last victory over Villanova in Walsh Gym came on Feb. 13, 2022, a 72-60 victory that snapped a nine-game win streak for the Wildcats.

SCOUTING VILLANOVA
The Wildcats are coming off a historically good campaign last year, which included a 30-7 mark overall and a 17-3 record in BIG EAST play. Villanova earned the No. 2 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament, but fell to top-seeded Connecticut in the title game. An at large pick to the NCAA Tournament, the Wildcats defeated Cleveland State and Florida Gulf Coast before falling to Miami in the Sweet 16.

Villanova has a different look this season as Maddy Siegrist, the BIG EAST Player of the Year and national scoring champion, moved on to the WNBA. Returning is All-BIG EAST Preseason selection, Lucy Olsen and Christina Dalce, last year's conference leader in blocks. Villanova also added three newcomers, including two freshmen and one transfer, but the transfer, Denae Carter of Mississippi State will miss the entire season due to an injury.

The Wildcats were picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST this year according to the preseason coaches' poll… one spot ahead of the Pirates.

Villanova has had an inconsistent start to the 2023-24 season and enters Wednesday's contest with an 8-5 overall record and a 1-1 mark in BIG EAST play. Seton Hall and Villanova have had two common opponents already this year, with the Wildcats also dropping games to Columbia and Princeton. Villanova opened BIG EAST play with a 51-46 loss at St. John's, but is coming off an 86-45 victory over Xavier on Saturday. Lucy Olsen has had a breakout season so far, leading the BIG EAST with 24.0 points per game.

UP NEXT
Seton Hall will return to action on Saturday, January 6 when it makes the trip to Indianapolis, Ind. for a contest at Butler. Tip time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The contest will be streamed live by the BIG EAST Digital Network and available for FloHoops subscribers. Bobby Steiner and Brian Henderson will have the call for WSOU FM.
