CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Off the back of nine runs in the first two innings, the Pirates (5-9) ended their weekend at the Party at Palmer Invitational with a win over 11-6 Cornell.

How It Happened

As they have in multiple games this weekend, the Pirates jumped out to an early lead. After two runners found their way on with one out, the carousel began spinning. A Hannah Alexander single scored Taylor Hill, which was immediately followed by an Olivia Gilbert single to score Kelsey Carr and go up 2-0. After a groundout the next at-bat, Caroline Hobbes continued her hot two-day stretch and smacked a two-RBI double into left field to make it a 4-0 Pirate lead. The inning culminated with Kyra Kreuscher singling into right-center field and collecting her first-career RBI as a result. At the end of the first frame, the Pirates held a 5-0 lead.

The Pirates piled on in the second inning when the Pirates loaded the bases with one out. Seton Hall went up 6-0 after Katey Brennan scored on a fielder's choice, but it did not stay that way for long as a wild pitch allowed Carr to score and make it a 7-0 lead. The margin grew to as many as nine though when a Cornell error with two outs allowed two Pirates to score and make it a 9-0 game.

Despite the large lead, the Pirates offense kept hunting but struggled to hit pay dirt again for multiple innings. Meanwhile, early dominance on the mound from the Pirates allowed them to hold Cornell at bay. A two-run third inning and a four-run fifth inning prompted moments of potential concern, but Gilbert put any comeback to bed in the seventh inning. The first baseman mashed a two-run home run to make it a five-run game again, 11-6. Kreuscher stepped on the mound, collected the save and secured the 11-6 victory for the Pirates.
