South Orange, N.J. -- Coming off of a season where it posted its most victories and BIG EAST points in more than a decade, the Seton Hall women's soccer team will to continue to progress in year three under head coach Josh Osit as the Pirates open their 2024 season at 6 p.m. against Marist at Owen T. Carroll Field on Friday.

MORE TAVANA MAGIC?
  • Senior Natalie Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) will look to build off of her magical junior season where she was named All-BIG EAST First Team and BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year.
  • Tavana was Seton Hall's first BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year since SHU Athletics Hall of Famer Kelly Smith earned the honor in 1999 and she was the Pirates' first All-BIG EAST First Team pick since 2013.
  • Tavana was also tabbed United Soccer Coaches Third Team All-East Region, the Pirates' first all-region selection since 2013.
  • Her single season point (26) and goal totals (12) both rank fourth in a single season in Seton Hall history.
  • She enters the season tied for fourth in program history with 42 career points and 17 career goals.
  • Tavana is also tied for seventh all-time with eight career assists.
PUCCI HOLDS IT DOWN
  • Arguably the most skilled player on the squad is at centerback in 2023 All-BIG EAST Third Team selection Chiara Pucci (Munich, Germany).
  • The senior, who hasn't scored yet in her collegiate career, scored in the Pirates' exhibition game against Monmouth off of a set piece.
  • She's played nearly 4,500 minutes in her career and has started 51 matches and played in 54.
  • She's a team captain along with Tavana for the second year in a row.
  • Pucci and Tavana gave Seton Hall its first season with multiple All-BIG EAST selections since 2013.
2024 RECRUITING CLASS RANKED 50TH NATIONALLY
  • Out of 333 Division I women's soccer programs, Seton Hall 2024 recruiting class was ranked 50th in the country by TopDrawerSoccer.com.
  • Osit has had strong ties nationally and in the Tri-State area going back to his days on the recruiting trail as an assistant coach at Columbia and Rutgers.
  • Midfielder Olivia Beavois (Windsor, Conn.), defender Kylie Ray (Hampden, Mass.) and other freshmen are expected to see the pitch early in the season.
THE OSIT EFFECT
  • Head coach Josh Osit inherited a Seton Hall women's soccer program that had tallied just 12 points in BIG EAST play the previous four seasons.
  • The Pirates have registered 14 points in the BIG EAST standings in the two seasons since he's taken over including 10 points last season, the most for the program since 2011.
  • Seton Hall earned two results against ranked opponents last season against No. 24 Xavier and No. 12 Georgetown, marking the first time since becoming a varsity program in 1994 that the Pirates have taken a point against multiple ranked opponents in the same season.

South Orange, N.J. -- Trailing 1-0 early in the second half, senior Natalie Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) scored the equalizing goal and senior Chiara Pucci (Munich, Germany) later converted a go-ahead penalty kick goal that gave the Seton Hall women's soccer team a 2-1 win at Owen T. Carroll Field on Friday night.

Tavana's goal was the 18th of her stellar career and Pucci scored her first collegiate goal to kick off her final season at Seton Hall. Freshman Olivia Beauvois (Windsor, Conn.) and senior Phoebe Hampson (Cheshire, England) assisted on Tavana's first goal of the season.

How It Happened

The first 45 minutes was played predominantly in the middle of the field with the Pirates putting together the only chances. The Hall put three shots on net including two by Pucci and one by graduate student Skyler Matusz (Kearny, N.J.).

Three minutes into the second half, a set piece from Marist off of a corner kick led to a goal off a header that gave the Red Foxes a 1-0 advantage. The Pirates, however, responded moments later when Hampson sent a deep pass to Beauvois on the near sideline. Beauvois then sent a centering pass into the box where it found Tavana who tapped the ball past the diving keeper that made it a 1-1 in the 48th minute.

The Pirates continued to create chances, putting up three shots including one from Tavana off the left post that nearly gave her second goal of the night. She would be involved in giving the Pirates the game-winning goal though as she received a free kick that was played short before being fouled inside the box. Not called a penalty initially, video assistant referee confirmed that there was a foul on Tavana inside the box. Pucci was chosen to step to the spot and she delivered a strike to the lower right corner of the net that gave Seton Hall a 2-1 lead in the 76th.

Seton Hall wisely controlled the clock the rest of the way and it posted its first victory of the 2024 campaign on opening night.

  • Seton Hall finished with a 12-2 advantage on shots and led 5-1 in shots on goal.
