SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Three Pirates scored at least 16 points and the Seton Hall women's basketball team outlasted St. John's, 74-66, in overtime before a raucous Walsh Gym crowd on Monday.
St. John's forced the extra session with a late run and a game-tying three-pointer with only 34 seconds left. In overtime, however, the Pirates upped their intensity and got a pair of three-point plays from Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) and Micah Gray (Oklahoma City, Okla.) before a massive three-pointer by Sha'Lynn Hagans (Manassas, Va.) to pull away from the Red Storm.
Baines started slow, but finished with team-highs of 17 points and 13 rebounds. Both Gray and Kae Satterfield (New York, N.Y.) had 16 points, while Hagans had a season-high 10 points off the bench.
Senior Amari Wright (Jacksonville, Fla.) had another strong game at the point with six points and game-highs of 10 assists and four steals.
THE STORY:
Seton Hall scored the first five points of the second quarter, and a jumper by Satterfield gave The Hall its first lead since the first bucket of the game, 15-13. Trailing 21-18, the Pirates scored six of the next eight points and a three-pointer by Gray put them on top, 24-23, with 41 seconds before halftime. A St. John's free-throw tied the score, but Wright sliced through the lane to beat the halftime buzzer and give The Hall a 26-24 advantage at the break.
The Hall scored the first four points of the third to grab a 30-24 advantage, but St. John's responded with a 7-0 run to capture a 31-30 lead with 6:18 left in the quarter. Seton Hall answered with a 12-4 spurt of its own, and a pretty fake and finish by Hagans with 58 seconds left gave it a 42-34 lead.
A jumper by Hagans with 8:53 left in the contest gave The Hall a 45-37 lead, but the Red Storm bounced back with a 7-0 burst to cut their deficit to only one, 45-44, with 6:53 remaining. Despite a strong defensive effort, St. John's Ber'Nyah Mayo hit a deep three pointer with 34 seconds left to tie the game at 57. The Red Storm had a chance to win, but I'yanna Lops (Stamford, Conn.) blocked Jillian Archer's shot with only five seconds left to preserve the tie.
In the extra session, the Pirates never trailed. Leading by one, Baines made a layup and was fouled for a three-point play. After The Hall's lead was cut in half, Gray had a three-point play as well to boost the Pirates' lead to 67-62 with 2:10 left in overtime. Leading by six with 48 seconds to go, Hagans drilled a dagger of a three-pointer in the corner to put The Hall up nine, 72-63.
THE NUMBERS:
- Seton Hall was 28-for-63 (44.4%) from the floor for the game, while St. John's was 25-for-57 (33.3%). The Hall was 3-for-13 (23.1%) from three-point range, while the Red Storm were 5-for-15 (33.3%).
- Baines had a team-high 17 points on 7-for-15 shooting with a game-high 13 rebounds and three steals.
- The Hall out-rebounded St. John's, 39-to-32, which included a 13-to-10 edge on the offensive glass and a 16-to-5 advantage in second-chance points.
- Satterfield had 16 points on 8-for-15 shooting with three rebounds.
- Seton Hall was 15-for-17 (88.2%) from the free-throw line, while St. John's was 11-for-18 (61.1%).
- Gray notched 16 points on 6-for-12 shooting to go with three rebounds.
- Seton Hall forced 16 turnovers, while the Red Storm forced 14. The Hall had a 16-to-9 advantage in points-off-turnovers.
- Hagans had a season-high 10 points off the bench and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field.
- Wright tallied six points with game-highs of 10 assists and four steals.
- Freshman Savannah Catalon (Burleson, Texas) had seven points, three rebounds and four assists, but most impressively was +19 for the game. The second-highest plus/minus for the game was only +9.
- Seton Hall improves to 12-7 overall and 4-4 in conference games, while St. John's drops to 11-9 overall and 5-3 in the BIG EAST.
- The Hall is now 39-49 all-time against St. John's and has won four straight games and six out of the last seven games in the series.
- For the 15th time in 19 games, Seton Hall forced more turnovers than its opponent.
- The Pirates collected 10 steals tonight against St. John's. It's the 11th time this year with double-digit steals.
- Baines' double-double is her third of the season and the 10th of her career.
- The Hall improves to 124-49 at home during Anthony Bozzella's tenure. Furthermore, the Pirates are 58-37 in BIG EAST play during this era.
