Charleston, S.C. - Sophomore Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a game-high 21 points, and sophomore Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.) recorded a second straight double-digit rebounding game, but the Seton Hall men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Long Beach State squad that made 55 percent of its shots in an 80-77 49ers victory Thursday in the first round of the 2015 Gildan Charleston Classic at TD Arena.

The Pirates took a loss for the first time this season, falling to 2-1 while the 49ers improved to 3-0. Seton Hall will face the loser of the Bradley-Virginia game Friday at 7 p.m., live on ESPN3, the WatchESPN app and AM970 The Answer.

Sanogo had 10 rebounds to go with a career-high four blocks and career-high four steals. Sophomore Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 15 points, and sophomore Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) chipped in 11. Senior Derrick Gordon (Plainfield, N.J.) had nine points and five assists.

Turning Point
After falling behind by 16 points with just over 10 minutes to play, the Pirates staged a rally to give themselves a chance to win. Whitehead was at the forefront of the rally, scoring 11 of the team's final 27 points, including a jumper at 6:28 to pull The Hall within five, 69-64.

Seton Hall's defense held the 49ers to one field goal in the final five minutes, giving the Pirates a chance to claw back. Whitehead drew a foul and made two free throws at 1:47, and after Sanogo picked Travis Hammonds, Whitehead got the loose ball and drained a jumper at 1:14 to pull the Pirates within four, 76-72.

It was 78-74 when Carrington swished a three-pointer to get the Pirates within one with less than 10 seconds to play. The Hall fouled immediately, sending Hammonds to the free throw line for a 1-and-1. He missed the front end, but grabbed his own miss for an important offensive rebound. After the Pirates fouled him again, Hammonds made both free throws, and Carrington's three-point try for the tie missed the mark.

Falling behind by 16 with a lockdown defense that allowed 80 points on 55% shooting says it all. Yuk!
