LAST GAME

The Hall used a game-changing 16-0 run spanning the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second to take the lead for good. The Pirates have now won nine of their last 10 games.

Cooks was perfect on Saturday, going 8-for-8 from the field, including 3-for-3 from three-point range for 19 points to go with a team-best eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks in only 20 minutes. LAST YEAR AGAINST ST. JOHN'S
Seton Hall and St. John's split their season series in 2021-22 with both teams winning on their home floors.

Mya Bembry collected her first career double-double and Park-Lane had a team-high 23 points, but The Hall fell at St. John's, 88-75, in their first meeting last year on Dec. 5 in Queens. The Red Storm used a 7-0 run to end the first quarter and take an eight-point lead into the second, and that proved to be the difference. Bembry matched her career-high with 14 points in the first half alone and pulled down a career-best 13 rebounds in a career-most 38 minutes.

On Jan. 19, Park-Lane and Andra Espinoza-Hunter combined for 56 points as the Pirates erased a 13-point deficit to defeat St. John's, 84-79, in Walsh Gym. With the game tied, Park-Lane had a go-ahead three-point play with 40 seconds left, and then came up with a steal on the Red Storm's next possession to seal the Pirates' victory. She tallied a game-high 31 points to go with eight assists and three rebounds.

SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S
St. John's is coming off a 12-19 season in 2021-22 featuring a 7-12 mark in BIG EAST play. The Red Storm defeated Xavier in the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament, but their season came to an end with a quarterfinal loss to Villanova.

This year, the Red Storm were picked to finish seventh in the 11-team BIG EAST according to the Preseason coaches' poll. Kadaja Bailey was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. St. John's lost First Team All-BIG EAST performer Leilani Correa, but returned four starters and brought in four transfers including point guard Mimi Reid and Georgetown's Jillian Archer.

This season, St. John's has exceeded all expectations and enters Wednesday's contest as one of the few remaining undefeated teams in the country. The No. 24 Red Storm is a perfect 13-0 overall and 4-0 in BIG EAST play. Among their victories was a 66-62 win over No. 13 Creighton back on Dec. 4. Most recently, they won at Georgetown, 68-48, on New Year's Eve. Jayla Everett leads the team with 17.1 points per game. Two players, Jillian Archer and Rayven Peeples are averaging more than 8.5 rebounds per contest.

UP NEXT
Seton Hall will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 8, when it travels to BIG EAST rival Providence. Tip time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The contest will be streamed live by the BIG EAST Digital Network and available for FloHoops subscribers. Justin Nicosia and Michael Stamm will describe the action for WSOU FM.

No surprise to see a tweet from the coach yesterday endorsing a 90 team NCAA tournament

No excuses, go win the game. This would be a nice addition to the resume.

SHU leads 34-25 at the half. Very competitive game, nice size crowd. LPL had
an excellent half. Good pressure led to several transition baskets. The game may come down
to limiting SJU offensive rebounds.

If we win, maybe Channel 7 will send Sam Ryan to South Orange to profile us like they just did St. John's.

SHU leads 59-37 after 3 quarters. Amari Wright playing a fantastic defensive game. Team has 24 points off turnovers
so far.

Final 72-51. Excellent performance and second top 25 win. I think SJU is a bit overrated, but
still a good team that was 13-0. SHU looking like an NCAA Tournament team. LPL was so efficient
early on and Amari Wright had 7 steals and 17 points. She is a future star. If the Men played like that
Prudential would really be rocking. It's a smart team and they all have decent offensive skills. They have a lot more work to do.

Watched my first women's game in a couple years. Had never been impressed with the athleticism of the women's game. This game changed my mind. Very entertaining..... quick moving, good shooting, good passing, good defense, the whole enchilada. Happy I went and happy the Pirates won.

THE STORY:
Seton Hall's defense was the story early on as St. John's connected on only two of their first 18 shots. The Pirates held the Red Storm without a field goal for 6:16 and built a 12-6 advantage. Leading 12-9, The Hall got a three-pointer from Cooks and a breakaway layup by Wright to grab a 17-9 lead.

The Pirates opened the second quarter with a 7-0 burst, and a three-pointer by Park-Lane gave them a commanding 24-11 lead under a minute into the second. Mya Bembry (West Orange, N.J.) hit a long jumper on the baseline to send The Hall into the locker room up, 34-25.

Seton Hall shot 46.7% from the field in the first half compared to just 29.4% for the Red Storm. The Pirate defense forced 10 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, and Wright alone, had five steals.

Leading 51-37, The Hall closed out the third quarter on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a three-pointer from Wright, to grab a 59-37 advantage. In the fourth, the Pirate lead was never reduced to lower than 18 points.

Seton Hall will return to action on Sunday, January 8 when it travels to BIG EAST rival Providence. Tip is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET. The contest will be streamed live by the BIG EAST Digital Network and available for FloHoops subscribers. It'll also be available on 89.5 FM WSOU or wsou.net.

This has the potential to be a special season. Offensively, they play at a great tempo. Park-Lane is like the PG that we have been hoping for on the Men’s side for a long time. She plays about a foot taller than her actual size.. The team as a whole are patient and they look for the best opportunity most of the time. Cooks can play inside and has the ability to score from the perimeter., On defense they pressure the ball and create a lot of turnovers. Wright was like Posh Alexander against SJU. They all bring something to the table.

One thing on the negative side that has been a common theme for the program, is the ability to defend the three in the last quarter. It has really hurt them in the past. I think players try to do too much and it leaves players open. So, if they can keep their composure on the defensive side they could make some noise. Walsh should see some nice crowds the rest of the way. Tony and the staff are doing an excellent job. Something to be proud of.

For those who complain about transfers just look at both SH and SJU. SJU added 4 transfers and they were vastly improved from last season. Tony has always used the transfer route and it’s been a plus for his program so while we may not like it , it’s here to stay and continue to grow as a way to add experienced talent to your program.

I don’t think people complain about it as much as they lament it.
