SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – After a week hiatus, the Seton Hall women’s basketball team has returned to the national polls, checking in at No. 25 in the USA Today Coaches Poll announced on Tuesday (Dec. 15). The Pirates have now been ranked in the Coaches Poll in three of the five weeks of the regular season and have received votes in the poll each week.
The Hall is also currently the third team receiving votes in the Associated Press Top-25 and cracked the AP Poll at No. 22 earlier this season. The Pirates (9-1) are coming off a 2-0 week with victories over Fordham (Dec. 9) and at Big South power Liberty (Dec. 12). Aleesha Powell (Philadelphia, Pa.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after averaging 18.0 points per game in the two wins.
The Pirates are led offensively by Tabatha Richardson-Smith (Bay City, Texas), who checks in at fourth in the BIG EAST with 16.0 points per game. Last week Richardson-Smith was named to the Early Season Watch List for the Naismith Trophy, presented nationally to the top women’s college player in the country. Shakena Richardson (Neptune, N.J.) ranks second in the conference and 31st nationally with 5.6 assists per contest and Tiffany Jones (New York, N.Y.) checks in at fourth in the league in rebounding (7.6 rpg) and third in 3-point field goal percentage (46.7).
Defensively, the Pirates are first in the BIG EAST and top-20 nationally in field goal percentage defense (33.1 percent) lead the league in scoring defense at 56.2 points allowed per game. Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) checks in at second in the conference and 25th in the country with 2.6 blocks per contest and Powell is top-10 in the league with 2.1 steals per outing.
The Pirates return to the hardwood for their non-conference finale on Sunday, Dec. 20 to take on Saint Peter’s at Walsh Gym. The Hall is 23-0 under third-year head coach Anthony Bozzella in non-conference home games and has won 26 of 27 overall on its home floor. Tip-off with the Peacocks is set for 12 p.m. and can be seen on the Pirate Sports Network.
