LAST WEEK
Seton Hall split a pair of matches last week on the road. The Hall fell in four sets at Villanova on Friday, before outlasting Georgetown in five sets on Saturday.

Graduate student Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) and senior Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) combined for 23 kills and only five errors, but the Pirates fell at Villanova, 3-1 (15-25, 29-31, 25-22, 15-25) on Friday. Matheny collected a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Lucas had 11 kills, only one attack error and an impressive .417 attack percentage. Freshman Senna Roberts-Navarro (Honolulu, Hi.) also collected 11 kills.

On Saturday, Lucas erupted for a season-high 18 kills and The Hall rallied from a 2-1 match deficit to outlast Georgetown, 3-2 (21-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 15-11). The Pirates won for the first time this season after losing the first set (1-7) and rallied after facing a 2-1 deficit after three. It's The Hall's first five-set road victory since edging Villanova on March 20, 2021.

Lucas was brilliant with 18 kills, only two attack errors and a .485 attack percentage.

For her efforts last week, Lucas was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.

PLAYOFF RACE
Seton Hall finds itself in a three-way tie for sixth place in the BIG EAST standings. The top six teams in the final standings will qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament. The Hall is tied with Butler, which makes Friday's contest so important, and DePaul.
  1. Marquette (9-1)
  2. Creighton (8-2)
  3. St. John's (8-2)
  4. Xavier (6-4)
  5. Villanova (5-5)
  6. Butler (4-6)
    SETON HALL (4-6)
    DePaul (4-6)
If the season were to end today, Butler would get the sixth playoff berth because it has defeated both Seton Hall and DePaul. The Pirates are 1-1 against the other two teams, and DePaul is 0-2.

SCOUTING BUTLER
On Friday, Seton Hall and Butler will meet for the 20th time in history. The Bulldogs own a 13-6 record in the all-time series and have won 10 of the last 11 meetings, including a four-set victory in Indianapolis earlier this season.

Matheny had team-highs of 10 kills and 16 digs, but The Hall fell in four sets, 3-1 (26-24, 16-25, 18-25, 16-25), at Butler on Oct. 6.

Matheny was brilliant with 10 kills, a season-high 16 digs and four service aces. Junior Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) also had a double-double, finishing with a team-high 20 assists to go with 13 digs. Junior Hanna Tulli (Collegeville, Pa.) matched her season-high with eight kills and collected four blocks.

Butler enters this weekend with a 10-11 overall record and a 4-6 mark in BIG EAST play, just like Seton Hall. The Bulldogs' victories have come over Providence, Seton Hall, Villanova and DePaul. Most recently, they were swept by Marquette and edged DePaul in five sets last weekend.

SCOUTING XAVIER
Seton Hall and Xavier will lock up on Saturday for the 20th time in history. Xavier has dominated the series in recent years having a 15-4 all-time record in the series and earning wins in nine of the last 10 matches. Earlier this season, the Musketeers downed the Pirates in Cincinnati in four sets.

Setters Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) and Maddie Klungel both recorded double-doubles, but the Pirates fell to Xavier, 3-1 (27-25, 17-25, 11-25, 26-28), on Oct. 7. Jakubowski had team-highs of 15 assists and 14 digs, while Klungel notched 12 assists and 10 digs.

Two additional Pirates came close to notching double-doubles. Madeline Matheny had a team-high 10 kills to go with eight digs, while Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) had eight kills, 10 digs and four aces.

Xavier enters the weekend with a 13-8 record overall and a 6-4 mark in BIG EAST play. The Musketeers have surprised in BIG EAST play with six wins so far including a five-set win over No. 11 Creighton on Sept. 23. They enter the weekend having lost two straight, however. Xavier lost to DePaul in four sets on Friday and was swept by Marquette on Saturday.

UP NEXT
Next weekend, The Hall will head back on the road. The Pirates will head to Connecticut on Friday, Nov. 3, followed by a match at Providence on Saturday, Nov. 4.
