WASHINGTON - The “Brooklyn Boys” tandem of sophomores Isaiah Whitehead and Khadeen Carrington combined to score 40 points, and the Seton Hall men’s basketball team’s defense held Georgetown to 37.7 percent shooting as the Pirates came away with a convincing 72-64 road win over the Hoyas Wednesday at Verizon Center.

The victory earns The Hall (18-7, 8-5 BIG EAST) a regular season sweep of the Hoyas, building upon the Feb. 6 69-61 win at Prudential Center. The Pirates have now won five of their last six games and hold sole possession of third place in the BIG EAST, half a game ahead of Creighton. The victory is also the 100th at Seton Hall for head coach Kevin Willard.

Whitehead continues his ascent into the elite of the BIG EAST, finishing with 22 points on 6-of-14 shooting overall and 4-of-5 from three-point range. He dished out six assists on the evening and now has nine 20-point efforts this season and 12 games of at least 15 points and five assists.

Carrington was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line en route to his 18-point night. Fellow sophomore Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) contributed 17 points, three assists and three steals.

Turning Point
After a successful first half that featured deflections and tight defending, the Pirates went into halftime leading by eight, 36-28. Then The Hall blitzed the Hoyas to start the second half, going on a 16-8 run. Carrington and Rodriguez each buried a triple, and Rodriguez’s layup at 16:40 put the Pirates on top by 10, 44-34.

With the score at 46-36 with 14:37 to go, the Pirates were inbounding the ball underneath their basket, and Rodriguez found a high-flying sophomore Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.) open in the middle of the paint for an alley oop layup. After getting a stop on the defensive possession, Whitehead then came back down and buried a three-pointer to put The Hall up 15, 51-36, and force a Hoyas timeout with 14:11 to go.

That was actually Seton Hall’s final made field goal of the night, but the Pirates took care of business at the free throw line, going 21-for-26 in the second half and 25-for-30 in the game overall. Georgetown got as close as six points, but the Pirates kept making their free throws to fend the Hoyas off.

Inside the Numbers
  • Seton Hall shot 38.5 percent for the game, but was 7-for-14 from three-point range and 25-for-30 from the free throw line. The Hall’s defense held Georgetown to 37.7 percent shooting overall and 22.2 percent (6-for-27) from behind the arc.

In conference play overall, Whitehead is averaging 18.7 points and 5.7 assists, placing him in the top three in the league in both categories.

It's great to see with road games still remaining against St. John's & DePaul, that the team has a very realistic shot of setting a Big East Road record victory total of six wins.! (Would not it be great if they could also beat Butler to set the bar even higher at seven road wins!) GO PIRATES!
