CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. - The Seton Hall women' golf team will look to become the first program in school history to win four straight BIG EAST titles this weekend as it returns to the friendly confines of Callawassie Island Golf Club for three rounds of the conference's marquee event, April 21-23.

In six years of existence, the Pirates have gone from fledgling up-start to a championship dynasty. Seton Hall has won the last three BIG EAST Conference championships, proving it can win as both the underdog and the favorite. Last year, The Hall was ranked fourth in the six-team field, but shocked top-seeded Georgetown with a 12-stroke victory. This weekend, The Hall, playing as the No. 3 seed, will look to surprise No. 1 Georgetown and No. 2 St. John's again.

"We're ready," said head coach Sara Doell. "This is a much different team than in the past, considering its youth. However, we've accomplished a lot in a short period of time with four, top-3 finishes, including a team title at William & Mary. We've been a little inconsistent at times this year, but that's normal with such a young team. I love the potential we have, and can't wait to begin this event."

With the maturation of juniors Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) and Macky Fouse (Aliquippa, Pa.), and the emergence of newcomers Maddie Sager (Phoenixville, Pa.), Sammie Staudt (Coatesville, Pa.) and Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio), the Pirates were able to shave nearly four strokes off last year's scoring average.

Pantelas emerged from the shadows of a trio of Seton Hall seniors last year as the team captain and vocal leader in 2017. Recently named to her second straight All-BIG EAST Team, she brings the most experience of any Pirate into this weekend's championship.

"Mentally, we're a really strong team," Pantelas said. "We've taken the proper approach to tournaments all year long, and we're in a good place heading to Callawassie this weekend. We have five players in our lineup that are capable of winning any tournament. I look forward to seeing who rises to the occasion."

2017 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP
Host: BIG EAST Conference

Course: Callawassie Island Golf Club (Dogwood & Magnolia)
Course Vitals: Par-72, 6,166 yards
Dates: April 10-11, 2017, Three Rounds

Championship Format:
Six team, 54-hole, stroke play Championship. Teams compete in groups of three. The event is conducted over four days with each team's five members playing a practice round of 18 holes on day one, one 18-hole round on days two, three and four.

The Course:
The club features three nine-hole courses. The competition will play the first nine holes on the Dogwood Course and the second nine on the Magnolia Course. Designing Callawassie Island's award-winning championship 27-hole course, Tom Fazio took advantage of the island's natural beauty to create a juxtaposition of visual drama and superb playability. Magnificent live oaks and magnolias, as well as freshwater ponds and the surrounding saltwater marsh, come into play on most holes. Inspiring vistas and abundant wildlife make nature part of the golf experience.

The Field:
For the BIG EAST Championship, the field is limited to only the six women's golf teams of the conference. This includes (in order of Golfstat ranking): Georgetown, St. John's, Seton Hall, Xavier, Butler and Creighton.

The Lineup:
Seton Hall will start the following golfers in Callawassie Island, in order as listed:
  1. Cassie Pantelas, Junior
  2. Lizzie Win, Freshman
  3. Maddie Sager, Freshman
  4. Sammie Staudt, Freshman
  5. Macky Fouse, Junior
Last Time Out:
Sager shot a 4-over-par, 76, in Tuesday's final round to lift the Pirates to a 10th place finish at the Hoya Invitational on April 11.

Sager finished the tournament as the top Pirate performer with a 13-over-par, 78-75-76-229 to tie for 21st place among 88 individual golfers. It's the third time in four tournaments this spring that Sager has had the low score for the Pirates.

Collectively, the Pirates shot an identical score as their second round score in round three, a 24-over-par, 312. The Pirates were able to climb one spot in the final standings to 10th place overall with a 79-over-par, 319-312-312-943.

Last Time at BIG EAST Championship:
Three Pirates shot under 80 in Sunday's final round to lift the Pirates to their third straight BIG EAST Conference championship last spring. Seton Hall shot a 26-over-par, 314, five shots better than its closest opponent, Georgetown in the final round. Midway through the round, the Hoyas erased the Pirates' seven-shot lead entering the day and took a slim lead. The Hall however, bounced back late and eventually won the tournament by 12 strokes over the Hoyas.

Pantelas and Karlie Zabrosky finished the tournament at 15-over-par to tie for fourth among all individual golfers and were named to the All-Tournament Team. For the tournament, Pantelas shot a 15-over-par, 80-73-78-231. Xavier's Shane Crutchfield won the individual title at 6-over-par.

Tee Times:
Seton Hall will be paired with golfers from No. 1 Georgetown and No. 2 St. John's in Friday's first round. Fouse will get the Pirates started at 8:50 a.m. off the first tee of the Dogwood course. Each Pirate will follow in increments of 10 minutes thereafter.

CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Junior Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) and freshman Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio) were named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team as announced by the conference on Thursday.

For the second straight year, Pantelas was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. The Pirate captain led the Pirates for the 2016-17 year with a stroke average of 77.00. A BIG EAST Academic All-Star, she also notched four top-10 finishes and two top-5 finishes this year. Named BIG EAST Golfer of the Week on Sept. 14, Pantelas notched her third career sub-par round, a 1-under-par, 71, in the second round of the Jackrabbit Invitational. She finished second at the William & Mary Invitational and tied for fourth at the Delaware Lady Blue Hen Invitational.

Win has been a major part of the Pirates' success as soon as she arrived in South Orange. Named BIG EAST Golfer of the Week on Sept. 21, she ranks second on the team with a 77.75 stroke average for the year. Win's fall and spring stroke averages also rank second-best for the Pirates. She has tallied three top-10 finishes this year, and two top-5 efforts, which include a third place showing at the William & Mary Invitational and a fourth place finish at the Rutgers Invitational.

Pantelas, Win and the rest of the Pirates will attempt to defend their three-time BIG EAST Championship this weekend in Callawassie Island, S.C.

PANTELAS LEADER IN THE CLUBHOUSE; PIRATES FOURTH

Story Links
CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Junior Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) fired a 1-under-par, 71, and is the individual leader in the clubhouse, after round one of the 2017 BIG EAST Championship on Friday. As a team, the Seton Hall women's golf team is currently in fourth place.

Pantelas was brilliant in round one, using four birdies and an eagle on the par-5, 11th hole to vault to the top of the player scoreboard. She improved as the day went on, shooting 2-under-par on the back nine and was par or better over her final five holes. Georgetown's Alexa Popowitz is in second at even-par and St. John's Kaitleen Shee is third at 1-over-par.

Pantelas has one win in her collegiate career so far, a victory at the St. John's Intercollegiate as a freshman. No Seton Hall player has ever won the BIG EAST individual title in its brief seven-year history. Today's round was the fourth sub-par round of Pantelas' career.

As a team, the Pirates shot a 27-over-par, 315, in round one and will need to rally over the next two days in order to win a fourth consecutive BIG EAST Championship. The Hall trails Georgetown by 19 strokes for the team lead. St. John's is second, 12 strokes ahead of the Pirates, and Butler is third, six strokes in front.

Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio) is currently tied for 18th place following a 7-over-par, 79. She was only 3-over-par through 10 holes, but triple-bogeyed on No. 11. Win bounced back nicely however, to par her final six holes.

Freshman Sammie Staudt (Coatesville, Pa.), playing with a sore wrist, completed her first BIG EAST round with a 10-over-par, 82. Her back nine was also better than her front. Staudt ended her round with par or better on four of her final five holes.

Junior Macky Fouse (Aliquippa, Pa.) and freshman Maddie Sager (Phoenixville, Pa.) rounded out the Pirates scoring with an 11-over-par, 83, apiece. Fouse was done in by a 4-over-par, 9, on the 17th hole, otherwise she had a fine first round. She birdied the first hole of the day. Sager had difficulty with a triple-bogey on No. 14. She was only 3-over-par over the remaining eight holes on the back nine.

PANTELAS MAINTAINS LEAD; WILL VIE FOR TITLE TOMORROW
Story Links
CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Junior Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) shot a 2-over-par, 74, in Saturday's second round and has expanded her individual lead to two strokes with 18 holes remaining at the 2017 BIG EAST Championship. The Pirates remained in fourth place as a team.

Pantelas entered the day with a one-stroke lead over Georgetown's Alexa Popowitz and a two-stroke advantage on St. John's Kaitleen Shee. She was consistent throughout the round, registering two bogeys and two birdies through 17 holes. Pantelas double-bogeyed the 18th hole, but did a fine job of preventing further damage and maintained her lead despite the tough finish. Shee also finished at 2-over-par, and Popowitz was 4-over-par, which gives Pantelas a two-stroke lead entering Sunday with a 1-over-par, 71-74-145.

No Seton Hall player has won the BIG EAST individual title in its brief seven-year history. Pantelas will look to make history tomorrow.

As expected the Pirates performed better in round two as a team. The Hall shaved four strokes off their first round score, finishing with a 23-over-par, 311. Unfortunately for the Pirates, the three teams ahead of them finished with better round two scores. Through two rounds, Seton Hall is 50-over-par with a 315-311-626. Georgetown leads the tournament at 23-over-par, and leads Butler by eight strokes. St. John's is third at 34-over-par.

Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio) and Macky Fouse (Aliquippa, Pa.) saw the biggest Seton Hall improvements in round two, bettering their score by four strokes each. Win shot up the scoreboard with a 3-over-par, 75, today and is currently tied for 10th place overall. She parred 11 of her final 12 holes. For the tournament, she is 10-over-par with a 79-75-154. Fouse used three birdies to spearhead her improvement as she climbed five spots in the individual standings with a 7-over-par, 79. Through two rounds, she is 18-over-par with an 83-79-162.

Maddie Sager (Phoenixville, Pa.) had a strong front nine at 3-over-par, but struggled on the back, finishing with five straight bogeys. She finished round two with a second straight 11-over-par, 83. With 18 holes to play, she is 22-over-par with an 83-83-166.

Also at 22-over-par is classmate Sammie Staudt (Coatesville, Pa.), who logged a 12-over-par, 84, in round two. For the tournament she has an 82-84-166.

PANTELAS FINISHES SECOND AT BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP
Story Links
CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Junior Cassie Pantelas(Canton, Ohio) shot a 5-over-par, 77, in Sunday's final round to tie for second at the 2017 BIG EAST Championship. The Pirates finished in fifth place as a team.

Pantelas, the BIG EAST individual leader after the first and second rounds, had a front-nine that proved difficult from which to recover. The Pirate captain was 1-under-par through three holes, but double-bogeyed the fourth and ninth holes. Pantelas was fantastic on the back-nine, shooting even-par, including birdies on No. 11 and No. 17. For the tournament, she tied Georgetown's Lauren Gros at 6-over-par, four strokes behind the individual champion, Butler's Lauren Tibbets. Pantelas shot a 71-74-77-222.

Although no Pirate has won an individual BIG EAST title, Pantelas becomes the third Pirate to finish second, joining Erin McClure (2014 & 2015) and Megan Tenhundfeld (2014). As a result, she was named to the All-Tournament Team for the second straight year.

For a second straight day, the Pirates improved as a team, albeit marginally. The Hall shot a 22-over-par, 310 on Sunday to finish fifth overall. The Pirates' final three-round score was a 72-over-par with a 315-311-310-936. Georgetown won their first-ever team championship at 32-over-par, after finishing second to the Pirates the last three years. Butler placed second at 41-over-par, while St. John's placed third at 60-over-par, and Xavier was fourth at 69-over-par.

The top Pirate performer on Sunday was freshman Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio), who turned in an eye-popping 1-over-par, 73. Win was spectacular, finishing her round with 10 straight pars. She had 15 pars in all, bogeys on holes No. 4 and No. 8, and a birdie on No. 6. In her first-ever BIG EAST Championship, Win finished seventh overall with an 11-over-par, 79-75-73-227.

Freshman Sammie Staudt (Coatesville, Pa.), despite a sore wrist, shaved six strokes off her second round score, to finish with an impressive 6-over-par, 78, on Sunday. Staudt was consistent throughout, shooting 3-over-par on both the front and back nines. For the tournament, she tied for 22nd with a 28-over-par, 82-84-78-244.

Junior Macky Fouse (Aliquippa, Pa.) also tied for 22nd overall at 28-over-par. On Sunday, she finished strong, shooting 4-over-par on the back nine, including a birdie on the difficult par-5, 17thhole. Fouse finished with an 82-84-78-244.

Rounding out the Pirates' scoring, freshman Maddie Sager (Phoenixville, Pa.) shot a 16-over-par, 88, on Sunday. She finished the tournament with a 38-over-par, 83-83-88-254.
