  • In seven seasons of competition with Osit on staff, Columbia had a winning record in six campaigns, including a 9-3-4 mark in 2019, which constituted the program's highest winning percentage since 2008. Between 2015 and 2017, the Lions were the only women's soccer program to finish top three in the Ivy league all three seasons. South Orange, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's soccer team registered a statement win at Owen T. Carroll Field on Thursday evening as the Pirates rode a stellar effort in goal by senior Grace Gordon (Chester Springs, Pa.) and an offensive outburst in a 3-0 victory over Columbia.

Gordon posted 10 saves between the pipes for The Hall (4-2-2) and has registered four consecutive clean sheets. The goal scorers for the Pirates were freshman Emma Sheehan (Argyle, Texas), sophomore Phoebe Hampson (Cheshire, England) and sophomore Natalie Tavana (Middletown, Conn.). Tavana also assisted on Hampson's goal.

How It Happened

Both sides were easing their way into the game early when Pirates created an opportunity just before the 15 minute mark. Junior Maille McDermott (Nashua, N.H.) created space with the ball down the near sideline and drove a pass into the box that found the head of Sheehan, who finished it cleanly despite being draped by a defender.

With the Pirates leading 1-0, the Lions picked up the pace and put two shots on goal but both were stopped by Gordon. In the 34th minute, sophomore Chiara Pucci (Munich, Germany), was an eraser all evening at centerback, took the ball away, made a clean pass just past midfield to Tavana, who took one dribble before finding Hampson in the six-yard box. She calmly took the pass and chipped the ball past the keeper off her line to give Seton Hall a 2-0 lead.

The Lions' intensity rose after halftime and put multiple quality shots on goal. However, nothing on this night was getting by Gordon, who made multiple clutch saves down the stretch in the second half. The icing on the cake was applied by Tavana, who took a long range shot in the 84th minute and struck the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

News & Notes
  • The Pirates wrap up non-conference play with a 4-2-2 record and are now 9-5-2 against non-league opponents over the last two seasons.
  • Head coach Josh Osit earns a victory over Columbia, a team where he had spent the last eight seasons as an assistant coach.
  • McDermott's assist was the first assist and point of her career.
  • Hampson tallied her first career goal and Pucci added her first career assist on the goal.
  • Tavana now has four career goals and five career assists.
  • The backline of Pucci, junior Alex Fuggle (Longdon, England) and sophomore Rachel Gerrie (Littleton, Colo.) played the full 90 minutes.
  • Sheehan finished with a team best three shots and two shots on goal in a game where she netted her second career goal.
