BIG EAST Release

NEW YORK
– The Seton Hall softball team has been tabbed to finish fourth in the BIG EAST, according to a vote of the league coaches, as announced by the league on Monday (Feb. 1). The Hall under fourth-year head coach Paige Smith returns six players that made at least 30 starts last season, including reigning BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas).

The Hall finished 25-28 last season, with a 10-10 record in BIG EAST play to place third in the final league standings. The Pirates reached the title game of the 2015 BIG EAST Championship before falling to eventual champion St. John’s, 7-5, in the final innings in Rosemont, Ill. The Hall improved its offensive numbers across the board in 2015, including a 33-home run jump and an 80-point spike in slugging percentage.

In addition to Walkden, who set a Seton Hall single-season home run record with 20 long balls as a rookie last season, The Hall returns fellow All-Conference First Team Selection Yasmin Harrell (Cheektowaga, N.Y.). Walkden hit .373 with 51 RBIs and a 1.282 OPS in 2015, while Harrell batted .330 and stole 15 bases. Other top returners include senior captain Alex Rabbetts (Corona, Calif.), who hit .267 with three home runs, and Sara Foster (Long Beach, Calif.) who batted .269 and was 4-for-4 on the basepaths.

The Pirates were selected fourth behind defending league champion St. John’s, Villanova and DePaul. Rounding out the poll behind Seton Hall were Creighton, Butler, Providence and Georgetown. The Hall begins the 2016 campaign on Friday, Feb. 12 against Grambling State at the ULM Mardi Gras Classic in Monroe, La.

Sounds like the program is making progress under Paige but the key to softball success is getting the big time number 1 pitcher .

Softball as much as any team sport is about one player. A dominating pitcher. And most of them do not stay in this area.

BTW, pretty disappointing that the Big East doesn't have ten teams.
