Pirates Trounce Bison Behind Monster 2nd Quarter, 87-63

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Five Pirates scored in double-figures and the Seton Hall women's basketball team used a game-changing 35-3 first-half burst to defeat Howard, 87-63, in historic Walsh Gymnasium on Friday.

Seton Hall held the Bison to just one field goal from 1:35 left in the first quarter to halftime and outscored them 29-3 in the second quarter. Howard's three points in the second quarter is tied for the second-lowest output by a Seton Hall opponent in program history.

Sophomore Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas) turned in her second-consecutive 20-point game, leading The Hall with 21 points to go with a career-high six steals. Faith Masonius (Spring Lake, N.J.) added 16 points, and Jada Eads (Orlando, Fla.), who made her first collegiate start, finished with 14 points. Yaya Lops (Stamford, Conn.) had 12 points and Shailyn Pinkney (East Hartford, Conn.) tallied 10.

THE STORY:
Trailing 4-0 early, Howard went on a 16-4 run to grab a 16-8 lead with 4:38 left in the first quarter. Down 19-10, The Hall found its long-distance touch. A three-pointer by Amari Wright (Jacksonville, Fla.), followed by trifectas on back-to-back possessions by Catalon cut Seton Hall's deficit to 21-20 at the end of the first quarter. The Pirates trailed by only one after 10 minutes despite the Bison shooting 64 percent from the floor.

The Pirates opened the second quarter with the first 12 points, and ultimately stretched its run to 25-1 going back to Catalon's three-pointers to close the first. A pair of free-throws by Ja'Kahla Craft (Elk River, Minn.) extended capped the run and extended The Hall's lead to 39-22. Howard didn't collect its first made field goal until there was only 3:34 left before halftime. For the quarter, The Hall held the Bison to just 1-for-10 shooting and outscored them 29-3. The Pirates took a commanding 49-24 advantage into halftime.

Eads banked in a three-pointer as time expired to end the third quarter and give The Hall its largest lead of the game, 75-43. Howard never cut their deficit to fewer than 23 points in the fourth.





THE NUMBERS:
  • Seton Hall was 32-for-69 (46.4%) from the floor for the game, while Howard was 23-for-48 (47.9%). The Hall was 14-for-33 (42.4%) from three-point range, while the Bison were 3-for-12 (25.0%).
  • Catalon had a team-high 21 points on the strength of 5-for-8 shooting from three point range. She also a career-high six steals and three rebounds.
  • The Hall out-rebounded Howard, 35-to-30, which included a 15-to-8 edge on the offensive glass and a 11-to-10 edge in second-chance points.
  • Masonius had 16 points on 8-for-14 shooting with five assists and four rebounds.
  • Seton Hall was 9-for-10 (90.0%) from the free-throw line, while Howard was 14-for-20 (70.0%).
  • Eads had a career-high 14 points in her first collegiate start. She was 4-for-8 from three-point range and added four rebounds and three assists.
  • Seton Hall forced 18 turnovers, while the Bison forced 13. The Hall had a 37-to-18 advantage in points-off-turnovers.
  • Lops tallied 12 points on an efficient 5-for-7 shooting to go with five rebounds and two blocks.
  • Pinkney had a strong all-around game with 10 points, a team-high seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.





THE NOTES:
  • Seton Hall improves to 6-2, while Howard drops to 5-4.
  • The Hall is now 4-1 all-time against the Bison.
  • The Pirates' three points allowed in the second quarter is tied for the second fewest by a Seton Hall opponent in a single-quarter in program history.
  • Seton Hall has now forced more turnovers than its opponent in all eight games this season.
  • Tonight was Wright's 117th career game played, which is tied for ninth most in Seton Hall history.
  • The Pirates improve to 131-50 in Walsh Gym during the Bozzella era. Furthermore, the Pirates are now 69-13 against non-conference opponents at home.
  • The Pirates collected at least 10 steals for the seventh time in eight games this year.
  • With five assists tonight, Masonius surpassed the 300-assists mark for her career.
  • Seton Hall's 14 made three-pointers tonight is the most in a single-game since draining a program record 19 threes against Georgetown on Feb. 2, 2022.
  • Seton Hall's 22 assists and .424 three-point shooting percentage are also season-highs.
  • It's the first time this season that the Pirates have had four players reach double-figures in scoring.
