South Orange, N.J. – Seton Hall men's soccer travels to Milwaukee on Wednesday night for a showdown with Marquette. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m., with live coverage on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloFC.

LAST TIME OUT
The Pirates extended their unbeaten streak to seven with a 1-0 road win over UConn on Saturday night. Mattias Almeida Sundell (Sweden) got on the other end of a beautiful cross from Ralph Pascarella (Bellmore, N.Y.) to score what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 70th minute. Hannes Ronnholmen (Stockholm, Sweden) made three saves in goal to notch his fifth clean sheet of the season.

SCOUTING MARQUETTE (4-6-2, 0-2-2)
  • The Golden Eagles are fresh off a 3-3 draw at Providence which snapped a three-match losing streak.
  • After opening the season 3-1-0, Marquette has gone just 1-5-2 since.
  • Marquette ranks third in the conference with 26 goals scored on the season and have scored three or more goals in a game on four occasions.
  • The season series between the two sides is even at 7-7-3, with Marquette winning the most previous matchup last fall in South Orange.
NEWS & NOTES
  • The Pirates are unbeaten through five BIG EAST games for the second time in program history and the first time since 1991. The Pirates have never gone unbeaten through their first six conference games.
  • Hannes Ronnholmen's five shutouts are tied for the third most in a season in program history. His 0.90 GAA also ranks third lowest in a single season.
  • Seton Hall is one of only two teams in the BIG EAST with one or fewer losses so far this season (Xavier).
  • The win at UConn on Saturday night was the Pirates' first road win against the Huskies since a 3-2 overtime win in the semifinals of the 2000 BIG EAST Tournament.
  • Wednesday's tie against DePaul was the Pirates' fifth of the season, tying the single-season program record which has been done twice before (2014, 1979).
  • The Hall had an 11-2 edge in corner kicks on Wednesday against DePaul, their largest advantage in that category since owning a 10-0 margin in corners on Sep. 27, 2014, also against DePaul.
  • Borg's goal against St. John's was the latest regulation game-winning goal for the Pirates since CJ Tibbling's 89th minute goal against Air Force in the opening round of the 2020 NCAA Tournament.
  • Johannes Pex's penalty kick goal against Xavier was the latest game-tying goal scored by the Pirates since Spencer Burkhardt netted an equalizer at 89:58 in an eventual Pirate overtime win at Princeton on Sep. 7, 2017.
  • The Pirates scored a goal in each of their first nine matches of this season, doing so for the first time since 1999 when they scored in their first 11 matches.
  • Seton Hall has won its last seven matches, and 16 of its last 17, when scoring the first goal.
  • The win over Oregon State was the Pirates' first over a top-10 team in the United Soccer Coaches rankings since beating No. 2 Georgetown to win the BIG EAST title on Apr. 17, 2021. The win also marked the first time Seton Hall has defeated a top-10 non-conference foe since winning at No. 3 Virginia in the 2001 NCAA Tournament.
  • The Pirates conceded just one goal through its first three matches of the season, the program's best defensive start to a season since 2005.

Huerman's goal is also incredibly significant for its irony and poetic justice (if you're a Providence fan). Last week on Oct. 8th, Marquette's Edrey Caceres fired this long range shot in the 89th minute of a game against Providence to earn the tie. As amazing as Caceres's goal was, Huerman's was even longer range. I bet Huerman saw the video of Caceres's goal. It's just amazing that Marquette got beat on a similar shot!

Milwaukee, Wis. – Seton Hall won its second straight match on Wednesday night, earning a 3-2 victory against Marquette to remain tied atop the BIG EAST standings. Quenzi Huerman (Vannes, France) scored from beyond midfield in the 74th minute to put the Pirates ahead for good.

How it Happened
Marquette opened the scoring early, as Edrey Caceres fired one home from the top of the box in the eighth minute to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Later in the opening half, the Pirates would equalize. JP Marin (Briarwood, N.Y.) found Johannes Pex (Stephansposching, Germany) down the far touch line. Pex fed a cross into the box, which found the head of Mattias Almeida Sundell (Sweden), who headed one past Marquette goalkeeper Ludvig Malberg into the back of the net.

The Golden Eagles nearly took the lead back in the early stages of the second half, but a pair of strong plays in net prevented a goal. The first came from Luca Dahn (Kahl, Germany) who was in the right place at the right time as he used his head to deflect a shot from Caceres away from danger. Just over a minute later, Hannes Ronnholmen (Stockholm, Sweden) made a strong save on a point blank opportunity from Lukas Sunesson.

The Pirates' second goal would come soon after those two defensive plays. Pex played a cross into the box off a corner kick, and Paavo Riihijarvi (Oulu, Finland) got his head to it to score his first goal of the season.

Marquette would equalize in the 64th minute, as Beto Soto fired one past Ronnholmen after a scramble near the top of the penalty area. Ten minutes later, magic would strike for the Pirates.

After forcing a turnover in his defensive half, Huerman looked up and saw Malberg off his line at the other end of the pitch. The junior struck one with his left foot from behind the midfield stripe, bouncing it on one hop into the back of the net for the game-winning goal in the 74th minute.

News & Notes
  • The Pirates are unbeaten through their first six BIG EAST matches for the first time in program history.
  • Seton Hall extends its unbeaten streak to eight straight matches overall, with its lone loss of the season coming against Portland back on Sep. 5, a team which has since risen to No. 6 in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
  • Pex is the first Pirate to record multiple assists in a match since Denis Kelmendi did so on Oct. 27, 2021 at Butler.
  • With the win, the Pirates now lead the all-time series against Marquette, 8-7-3.
  • Sundell's goal was his third of the season and his second in as many games.

It’s really good to read about different athletic programs like men’s soccer and men’s golf doing well this year and I hope the rest of their season takes them into the NCAA tournament post season.

Xavier is the only BE ranked in the top 25 at number 13 while Butler is receiving votes and would be ranked in the top 35 .

It's unfortunate that Sat. game is the same time as the Pizza party. Will try to make both . Pizza then the 2nd half of the game. Go PIRATES !!!!!

I assume with a 2 hour window no one is staying that long except myself as I have to monitor the event and ensure that everyone in the Seton Hall section should be there.

With a pizza buffet there could be people not realizing it's strictly an SHU event in the back of the restaurant.

My guess is that it will be most crowded 330PM-400PM and then less so in the last hour.
