South Orange, N.J. -- Late inning heroics propelled the Seton Hall Pirates to a 6-5 victory, walking it off in the bottom of the ninth. Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.) led the way for Seton Hall, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Anthony Ehly (Glenside, Pa.) pitched five innings and allowed just three earned runs. Michael Gillen (Rochelle Park, N.J.) picked up the win, improving to 2-0 on the season. Aiden Robbins (Yardley, Pa.) recorded two hits and reached base safely in every at-bat.
How It Happened
The first three innings were a pitcher's duel. Ehly got into a little bit of trouble in the top of the first inning. He had two runners on with two outs but was able to force a groundout to end the inning. On the other side, Nick Tamburro only allowed one hit in the first three innings.
Monmouth was the first team to score. Ehly allowed the first two runners to get on base with Harry Padden up to bat. Padden connected on a pitch and went yard, bringing home three runners. Ehly retired the remaining batters, but the Hawks led 3-0.
The Pirates had an opportunity to respond when Robbins led off the inning with a triple. Robbins went to tag up after a Danny Melnick (Hamilton, N.J.) flyout, but the freshman never crossed home plate and was tagged out.
It would only take two innings for the Pirates to convert those chances into runs. After a dominant top half of the frame where Nate Espelin (Belmont, Mass.) struck out two batters, the Pirates' offense went to work. Robbins led a two-out rally after reaching base safely after a Monmouth error. The next four batters proceeded to get on base. Sylvester got the Pirates on the board with an RBI single and Staus Pokrovsky (Pittsgrove, N.J.) came up with the bases loaded and brought home two himself with a single. It was a 3-3 game after six innings.
In the eighth inning, the Hawks got two runners on with only one out. Jackson Balzan (Medford, N.J.) came in relief for Espelin and shut down the door. He forced a double play with bases loaded to keep the game tied.
In the bottom half of the frame, Cole Zak (Cleveland, Ohio) came in to pinch hit for Joey Calabretti (Perkasie, Pa.). With a runner on first and two outs, Zak ripped one into the left-center gap for a triple. The Pirates led 4-3 heading into the ninth.
Gillen came in to close the game, but Monmouth came back. The Hawks got two runners on base then proceeded to score their fourth and fifth runs of the game after back-to-back errors from the Pirates.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Pirates were unfazed. Kyle Lyons (West Chester, Pa.) and Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) started the inning with a single and a hit-by-pitch respectively. Robbins got on base after Monmouth committed an error, allowing Lyons to score. Sylvester walked it off with a sacrifice fly, giving Seton Hall the 6-5 victory.
