South Orange, N.J. – Seton Hall men's soccer continues its non-conference slate on Tuesday night when it welcomes Bucknell to Owen T. Carroll Field. Kickoff is set for 6:56 p.m. on the Pirate Sports Network.

LAST TIME OUT
The Pirates suffered their first defeat at Owen T. Carroll Field since 2021 with a 1-0 loss to Georgetown in the BIG EAST opener on Friday night. Jacob Murrell scored for the Hoyas in the 16th minute, a goal that held up despite several strong chances for the Pirates throughout the night.

SCOUTING BUCKNELL
  • The Bison enter play at 1-4-1 (0-1-0) on the season, coming off a 2-1 loss to Army in the Patriot League opener on Saturday.
  • Bucknell was picked to finish ninth in the Patriot League preseason poll released prior to the season.
  • The lone win of the season for Bucknell came in the season opener, a 2-1 win on the road at Mount St. Mary's.
  • The Bison own a 2-0-0 advantage in the all-time series with Seton Hall with the most recent matchup coming during the 2015 campaign. This is Bucknell's first visit to South Orange since 2013.
NEWS & NOTES
  • Seton Hall did not allow a goal through the first 332:38 of the season before conceding against No. 10 Indiana. This set a new program record for longest shutout streak to begin a season, previously set back in 2005.
  • Seton Hall's defeat to Georgetown on Friday was its first home loss since October 2021. The Pirates are 5-1-4 at home over the last two seasons.
  • Last week, the Pirates were ranked No. 23 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, entering the rankings for the first time since Sep. 14, 2021.
  • Seton Hall opened the season with a 3-0 record for the first time since 2008.
  • James Boote scored goals in back-to-back matches to open the season after entering the season with just one goal scored in his previous 65 career games.
  • With the season opening win over Rider on Aug. 24, the Pirates improved to 5-0-3 in season openers dating back to 2016.
  • Mats Roorda was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week on Aug. 28 for his efforts in posting a pair of shutouts against Rider and Air Force. Boote was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after his five-point week.
  • The Pirates face another challenging slate of matches in 2023, highlighted by five teams who made the NCAA Tournament last season. Included in those are matchups with Indiana and Creighton, both of whom made it all the way to the College Cup last fall.
  • The Hall welcome 12 new faces to the program, including several potential impact transfers: Rikard Cederberg (Bellarmine), Mats Roorda (Binghamton), Jared Smith (Quinnipiac) and Tim Strobeck (Clemson).
  • Three Pirates are capitalizing on their extra year of eligibility to return to Seton Hall as graduate students in 2023. James Boote, Andrea Borg and Hugo Keller will all suit back up for The Hall this season. All told, 19 players from last year's squad are back for the Pirates in 2023.
  • Starting this season, the Pirates will be vying to finish inside the top-eight in the BIG EAST standings. With the addition of Akron to the league as a men's soccer affiliate member, the now-12 team conference has been split into an East Division and Midwest Division. Each division winner will qualify for the BIG EAST Championship, with the next six best teams based on conference points solidifying the remaining berths.
  • Seton Hall was picked to finish fourth in the East Division. The Pirates received 36 points in the poll and sit behind third-place St. John's (40 points), second-place Providence (56 points) and first-place Georgetown (66 points).
  • The Pirates finished last season in second place in the BIG EAST standings after amassing 17 points during conference play. The second place finish in the program's best since winning the regular season title back in 1991, while the 17 points in league action were the program's most since 2006.

A dominant win against a very bad team. Hopefully this was a good confidence builder for our offense, which had been very anemic.

South Orange, N.J. – The Pirates' offense exploded on Tuesday night at Owen T. Carroll Field, netting four goals en route to a 4-1 win over Bucknell. Axel Berglund (Turku, Finland) and Jared Smith (Longmeadow, Mass.) each scored their first goals in a Seton Hall kit as part of the victory.

How it Happened
The match opened quietly, with neither side generating any dangerous chances through the early portion of the night. That changed in the 28th minute when Hugo Gerbore (Moelan Sur Mer, France) was tripped up in the penalty box. Andrea Borg (Sliema, Malta) stepped up on the ensuing penalty kick and buried his second goal of the season to give the Pirates the lead.

It looked as if that would be the lone tally of the opening half, but the Pirates added insurance heading into the locker room. Off a corner kick in the 45th minute, a rebound fell to the foot of Berglund who blasted his first career goal into the roof of the net.

Bucknell was able to come out early in the second half and cut the deficit in half thanks to a goal by Waldemar Kattrup in the 50th minte. However, Seton Hall was able to recapture momentum shortly thereafter. In the 64th minute, Tomas Nunez (Longchamps, Argentina) found space moving upfield and dumped a pass off to Borg. The senior crossed one to the back post, finding Tim Ströbeck (Hasselholm, Sweden) who fired home his second goal of the season.

Later on in the 80th minute, the Pirates would ice the victory with another tally. Hugo Keller (Sweden) received a pass out wide and sent in a beautiful cross to the back post. Smith made a strong back post run, heading it home to make it a 4-1 Pirate advantage.

News & Notes
  • This is the first time the Pirates have scored four goals in a match since Sept. 10, 2021 in a 4-3 win over NJIT.
  • Seton Hall has outscored its opponents 8-2 across four home matches so far this season.
  • Virgil Dall'Agnol (Grenoble, France) picked up his first two assists as a Pirate, getting helpers on the Berglund and Smith goals.
  • This is Seton Hall's first ever win over Bucknell in their third all-time meeting.
