This looks like the expected starting roster next year baring a surprise departure, a senior staying, or a prize transfer.

PG Richmond
SG Jamir Harris
SF Weston
PF Jackson
C Samuel

Not too exciting and will have a big problem as we will prob get outmuscled at every position except PG (assuming Richmond comes back to improve stock).

But if we make a few small changes, we can make our lineup bigger and potentially better.

PG Richmond. —Long/Conway/Harris

SG Weston - 6th manJamirHarris/Sanders

SF Jackson—-Powell

PF Samuel—

C A Transfer —Daniels/Smith

I know Weston will need to get better at dribbling/shooting and built up in one offseason to move from fresh SF to Soph SG. It’s certainly a big reach but possible for this top 80 recruit.

The switch for Tray Jackson to the 3 could be more realistic though. He needs to work on his dribble and be more nimble on defense switching on guards but it’s certainly possible. I like Jackson but at the PF he gets too overpowered in Big East most nights.

Samuel will be gone if he doesn’t get to play his 4 position next year IMHO. Hell he wanted to play the Desi Rod SF role when he committed. He needs to play better overall D, foul less, and a competent center to play next to him.! Maybe have a center transfer, one of Yetna/Ike stay or groom a competent big already on roster (more likely) so he doesn’t have to play there.

Thoughts?

Too early to say. So much can and will happen. Richmond at PG is the only position I believe is solidified. I'd prefer Samuel at the 4 as a projection. Jackson/Weston looks like a decent combo at the 3.

Samuel will be the center imo. I think that is pretty certain tho I would love it id daniels or my man Smith are ready for serious minutes. Hope weston is as good as I hope and wonder where the frosh guards will fit in.

If ty can make 3s he will get them whether he plays 4 or 5 on offense imo.

fair to say that whichever of the 2 to 4 transfers we sign are going to have a say in the starting lineup. Coach will have a ton of time to show transfer recruits so I expect there will be good quality coming our way.

I can see Richmond and Harris as our starting guards and making a good combination.Jackson and Samuel will get significant minutes but not sure at what positions yet.Weston hasn't seen the court so projecting a starting role feels like real conjecture.Look for Willard to recruit a transfer C and PF for toughness and rebounding.Forget about Smith and Daniel seeing much of the court next year.

These things have a way to work themselves out.
Defense is a massive issue with the players we currently have on the roster for next year.
We need a shot blocker to hide the problem until we figure it out. I have faith guys will improve defensively, and at the end of the year next year we will be a good defensive team, but that shot blocker will be a big factor in allowing next years team to grow during November - January.

I think Jahari Long is a big factor. Despite what this board thinks of Long, Willard obviously loves the young man so much that he even had a start early in the year I believe when Cale when out. I think he's going to be a Shavar type player who gets minutes because of his D.

I think Long is gone but we will wait for that conversation .

Why do people love jahari. He seems very very slow on d and we havent seen him much on offense

Until we know how many scholarships we have and if players who will graduate this year return or leave it’s difficult to project with any certainty who will start next year . Whatever scholarships are available you would expect Willard and his staff to hit the transfer portal hard to fill those slots.

Because Willard raves about him. Unfortunately he has had a lot of bad luck here so we haven’t really gotten to see him in action outside of a few minutes here and there. Now there’s always the chance that Willard is blowing smoke, but I have no reason not to believe that Long is a good player. At 6’5”, he’s big like Willard likes and he’s careful with the ball. I would love to see him here next year as someone who knows the system and who has played some real Big East minutes, albeit not many, to this point.

Why isnt Long on the bench ? or is he?

Based on all the hype that is shared consistently coming into the season about various players all the time, you can’t discount the blowing smoke angle.

Covid and an injury have been significant contributing factors to lack of productivity.

However, in the limited on the court minutes so far, he has not passed the eye test for me. Just one man’s opinion. Sports is clearly the opportunity to prove people wrong.

All of his minutes this season were with a knee injury that eventually shut him down so I write those off. Last year he was a true freshman and played real minutes as needed and I thought handled it well. In fact, I think he deserved more than 6 minutes in the second game of the BET against Georgetown after the strong 15 minutes he played in the first round against St. John’s that helped propel us to victory.

I agree he’s on the slow side and his jump shot needs a ton of work, but he will be in his third year in Willard’s system with a lot of young guards on the roster and I would love to see him stick around for another crack at it. I don’t think you can ever discount experience. Just look at what happened this year when it was supposed to be a youth movement.

Agree.Eye test says he doesn't have speed/quickness,ball handling abilities for BE PG.

I have not seen anything from Long that would justify optimism.

Far too early to speculate on rosters. The transfer market is such a huge piece of college basketball now and our coaching staff has proven themselves of doing very well in it.

Samuel at 4 seems to be the best fit. Would not be shocked if we land a solid transfer big to fill the starting 5 spot. I mean our last 3 centers were Delgado, Gill, and Obiagu. There has to be a talented or capable 5 out there that sees the success our bigs are having and wondering what's in the sauce in South Orange.

It's just impossible to speculate too much at this point. Last season at this time we were lamenting how that campaign was closing and the loss of Sandro moving to the next level. We had Rhoden coming back and not much more. The idea of being an NCAA team this year was a bit of a stretch. Then you have Aiken and Cale returning with the additions of Richmond, Yetna and Harris. The three recruits we thought would garner experience in a rebuilding situation never play at all for various reasons. At this moment you have a fully stocked backcourt for next season. We look solid at the three for now, but the rest of the frontcourt has several question marks with a lot of inexperience. Hopefully, Samuel continues his improved play the rest of the way this season.

Hope he makes a marked improvement like Harris has done. He looked totally overwhelmed athletically by other players earlier in the season and now is really a valuable contributor on both ends of the court. Love seeing how his 3 ball is dropping now reminds me of the daggers Powell used to hit!

Same here.

but Harris had already displayed the skill set of knocking down the 3 prior to getting to Seton Hall, he just hadn’t gotten comfortable adjust to the BE speed of play right off the bat, coming from American.

back to the eye test for me. Jahari appeared to be slower athletically on his recruitment film as well. Normally the player pops in terms of his skills relative to lesser HS competition. This is not what I saw from his videos. He seems larger than all his competitors but still very methodical in his approach as he got to the rim.

so if he doesn’t add that element of explosiveness to his game than he really needs to improve his 3 point shot dramatically from what he demonstrated to this point.

With the number of bodies (I don't use the word depth:), there should be enough of them to fill the minutes to score, but right now, there is a shortage of defense and rebounding until we see some of them play a game. Jackson, Samuel and Harris really need to up their defense and none consistently rebound well for their position.

Not as concerned about offense, as you would think Richmond will be better at distributing next year. Add that transfer rebounding machine/defensive center that can eat up 25 mpg supported by Daniels, Smith and Samuel puts them in the post-season conversation.

Would selfishly like to see Yetna and Rhoden back if these guys don’t have significantly better options professionally speaking.

Could we be next year's Georgetown?
No, that might be Providence.

Watson, Durham and Horchler are gone and Reeves, Minaya and Croswell are all seniors who may or may not come back. That's 75% of their rotation.

Their freshman class of five players has played a grand total of six minutes this season.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the only players who are ineligible for next season are Myles and Bryce.
