SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Behind a game-high 26 points from Aleesha Powell, the Seton Hall women's basketball team erased a seven-point halftime deficit to come away with a 66-54 victory over Fordham on Wednesday night at Walsh Gym. The Pirates (8-1) out-scored the Rams (3-5) by a margin of 35-15 over the final 14 minutes of the second half to secure the comeback victory. The 26 points for Powell (Philadelphia, Pa.) were the most for a Pirate this season and her most at The Hall, one off her career-best set at Iona.
Seton Hall also got 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting from Shakena Richardson (Neptune, N.J.), who dished out a game-high four assists and added three steals. The Pirates forced 20 turnovers and committed only 10, out-scoring the Rams 26-10 in points off turnovers.
The Pirates trailed by three after a quarter and were down 34-27 at the break before ripping off a 17-2 run in the third quarter to pull ahead for good. The Hall clamped down defensively in the second half, holding Fordham to 26.9 percent shooting in the third and fourth quarters and only 20 points in the half. Tabatha Richardson-Smith (Bay City, Texas) was the third Pirate in double-figures with 11 points and Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Samantha Clark led Fordham with 19 and Hannah Missry chipped in 11.
Turning Point
After Fordham opened up a 39-31 lead early in the third quarter, the Pirates exploded for a 17-2 run over five minutes to pull ahead 48-41 at the 1:46 mark of the frame. Lay-ins from Richardson and Powell and a Richardson jumper cut the lead to two, before a Richardson-Smith triple gave The Hall its first lead since early in the second quarter. Five-straight from Powell stretched the lead to four before Richardson capped the run with another jumper to give The Hall its largest lead at seven.
