I just made the hard decision to say goodbye to my best friend, my dog, Gage. He was a loyal companion of 12+ years that enjoyed every minute of my time and affectionately and unconditionally loved me. If you’ve ever been through this type of trauma you know how difficult saying goodbye can be. Thank you for any thoughts and prayers.
RIP, little buddy

Balled my eyes out crying the day we put the family dog to sleep. They are like no other. The good news is your future will be filled with many great memories and will make you smile.

A lot of balling. It's been almost 72 hours and the hard reality is starting to set in. Now it's just getting through the firsts without my copilot in life. It does help knowing that so many others have had to push through similar circumstances. Dogs are such a blessing.

He was half Chihuahua and half bichon. Extremely loyal and protective if it was your lap he was sitting on.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

So sorry, NittanyPirate. Dogs are wonderful, unconditional cherished buds. Painful to say goodbye.

Today marks 3 weeks. I miss him every day but it’s getting better. I think the first week was especially hard because I couldn’t stop thinking about his final hours and saying goodbye. Now I’m able to spend more time remembering our great times together.

We got a rescued a puppy 6 days ago and although she will never replace Gage, “Charlie” has helped to fill the void in some respects. She is so sweet and energetic. Unfortunately for me she seems like she is going to be a mommy’s girl. I’ll work on stealing her.

Thanks for asking.

Just saw the thread. I hope you are doing better, Nittany,
Lost my cat of 16 years 3 years ago. Sam would sit on my lap and hug me around the neck while i watched TV. Every night for all those years. Rescued him from the woods as a kitten.
I cried like a baby when he died. Still miss him but have the memories- and then there is the Rainbow Bridge for consolation.
