When 2 star Maliek White verbaled this week-end. Had offers from a lot of Mid-Majors but also some power 5 schools like Pitt, Georgia Tech and BC plus a couple of others.

I've seen him listed as a 4-star and a 3-star by some sites, top 150 by 247.

Scout has him as a 4-star. He is a serious tough dude that is a winner. Cooley loves him. Anyway, they beat Pitt, Cincy, Georgia Tech and VCU for him. He is from Richmond Virginia so PC's new assistant Jeff Battle gets his 1st guy. I personally love this kid even though it takes us out of the Shamorie Ponds endless derby.

Strengths:
A hard-nosed and gritty lead guard who had a big summer on the travel circuit, White played his way into a high-major recruit before making his final decision. He owns a versatile offensive game which allows him to make plays for both himself and others off the bounce while also posing a consistent threat from the three-point line. He's good with the ball, able to get into the lane either in the open floor or playing off a ball-screen and is a good under-the-rim finisher (i.e. lay-up maker) with touch, dexterity and body control alike. His intangibles might be his best attribute as he plays with a major chip on his shoulder.

Weaknesses:
He's a good, not great, all-around athlete and probably faster than he is bouncy. He has a wiry build that could certainly use more muscle mass, but his toughness enables him to absorb plenty of contact for his size as it is. He tends to play a little upright off the dribble and so he's typically more reliable creating north to south than he is east to west without a ball-screen. His jumper can also be streaky, although his mechanics seem clean.

Bottom Line:
He's a tough point guard with a versatile tool set, but perhaps not any dominant weapons, who plays the game with a chip on his shoulder and can beat you in a lot of different ways.

Zags has a write-up on Shamarie Ponds announcing tomorrow, probably for SJU. I wonder if he told Cooley and then PC pulled the trigger with this kid.

That would seem to be the majority opinion. Ponds has been a strong SJU lean for a very long time.
